Flock All Night and CHS Sleep-in
Saw this on the Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=113781182015767
Just wondering what the planned route is, and from where we’re picking stuff up.
(I actually work at CHS in the building where they’ve been collecting donations, and most of it is large plastic bags of towels, warm clothing, etc. that would be difficult to carry on a bike without pretty extensive panniers or a trailer or something, so wondering if me and my two little grocery-bag panniers would be useful at all. Maybe other locations have been collecting more portable donations, though. Just curious!)
Oh, sorry. I really wish they’d post stuff on here too! From the Facebook page:

This month there will be a fun twist in our monthly nighttime party ride–we will be picking up donations for the CHS Sleep-In for Homelessness event being held at the City-County Building that night!
The ride will meet earlier to accommodating picking up the deliveries- *9:00p* (We intend to leave by 9:30p)
We will ride the regular slow-pace, but along the way we will be stopping at preplanned stops to load our bags/racks/trailer…s with donations to help the homeless in Pittsburgh.
Upon arriving at the City-County building, those who wish to stay the night and participate in the Sleep-In will be dropped off along with the donations, and then the ride will continue back to Oakland, allowing riders to drop off whenever they like.
As always, helmets are STRONGLY encouraged, and lights are MANDATORY. Bags, racks, panniers, and trailers will be helpful.

The Sleep-In for the Homeless raises awareness and funds for approximately 1,500 people facing homelessness in Allegheny County that Community Human Services (CHS) supports each year.
On any given night, approximately 2,468 individuals are homeless according to a 2010 point-in-time survey conducted by Allegheny County’s Department of Human Services.
Similar to a charity walk or run, participants sleep-out overnight at the City-County building in downtown Pittsburgh donating a minimum of $25 in pledges given by family and friends in support of their experience.
All funds raised are dedicated to housing, providing healthcare, feeding, and clothing people facing homelessness in Allegheny County. In addition to meeting basic needs, CHS moves people into long-term stable housing and services as quickly as possible.
I’m planning on dragging along my NashB.O.B. trailer for the occasion.
Sorry, Jeg–I had a busy day yesterday and forgot to post it on here.
As for details, I am not sure yet. I am working with Vivian C. to iron the whole thing out, but I have a feeling, nothing will be set until the day of.
If need be, I can bring my kid trailer to haul things.
Let me know.
^That would be very useful.
All I can bring is my messenger bag unless someone brings extra panniers I can strap to my rack (I do not).
I’ll bring my panniers, too…. but they’re not that big. Not sure you’d be able to stuff a large blanket in them.
Poked around CHS and found Vivian C. Apparently we’ll go to CHS (374 Lawn Street) first, pick up some stuff, then she will gauge how much room we have left and direct us accordingly to other spots (Market Square and PPG place were mentioned), until we’ve got all there is or all we can carry, and then we’ll go to City-County Building.
I don’t mean to hijack anyone’s project, just went looking for more info to maybe recruit some new people!
That’s perfectly fine Jeg. I take on a lot of projects and usually don’t get a chance to figure out details on stuff like this until the last minute. I understand that some people are antsy for details and would like them before I can provide them–it’s fine with me.
Although if you could inform me of what you are doing in the future, I would appreciate it, as it would prevent me from doing things that are already done.
I have a trailer I can bring, and a large backpack. I have a rack I usually don’t have installed, but could put it on if someone had extra panniers or something to loan. Please let me know in advance…
I have a kiddie trailer I can bring if someone wants to use it. I can’t attach it to my bike though (disk brakes in the way) so I would need to know ahead of time so I can drive.
What make of trailer? And what neighborhood do you live in? Asking because if it will fit my bike (sometimes I have issues with short chainstays) and not too far out of the way, maybe I might ride out and pick it up.
@Lyle- it’s a InStep Quick N Ez. It’s a basic trailer. I’m in Swissvale (at the top of the hill coming from Commercial or Braddock Ave). You’re welcome to ride over to get it or I can drive it over tonight.
I’ve got a metropolis messenger bag and a rack with no panniers, if anyone has extras. Could always pull a Marko and strap a trash can to it.
It looks like my plans are changing….. don’t count on my or my trailer…. sorry.
I can load a trailer with some big-ass panniers. Looks like a beautiful night for a ride.
all i can bring is a large messenger bag.. if i can find it around the house.
If we don’t have enough hauling capacity, it won’t be a problem. They are relying on us to bring the donations, we just thought it would be a fun twist to the ride.
Anyone bringing music?
Early this morning, at the tail end of the FOC ride — I used neville rather than pull a trailer up joncaire — I had a very near miss with a dillhat cyclist in Oakland. He ran the red on fifth and (dithridge?), with no headlight. He had two taillights, though. I did scream at him. I couldn’t decide whether to shout redlight or headlight so I combined them into rhedlight.
This was my second close call with a red-runner this year. After years of injury-free city cycling, if I get taken out by a cyclist I am going to be righteously pissed.
ieverhart: Jes ja!
Nick Sorry if I stepped on anyone’s toes; I’ll send you a message next time. I was just trying to get information and cleared up a few misconceptions about the CHS donations in the process (since I work there). Didn’t think anything new/worth reporting was planned.
Good thing we didn’t do anything dumb like ride through the southside last night. Commonwealth press had their window smashed out and there was a shooting, among a lot of people saying theres just a bad attitude down there in the last few days. Ugly.
oh man. yeah we should probably stay away from the south side from now on.
At least they are giving parking tickets for a single weekend, that will clean up the riff raff.
fuck the south side. last thing flock needs is some drunk pitt football reject plowing through us and speeding off.
@noah – why the need to cite a “drunk pitt football reject” when there is such a gallery of asshats from which to choose? (Not defending “pitt football rejects” here), just struck by your specificity. Did you have a specific encounter, or are you just making a broad generalization, because last time I was on Carson Street, it was well-populated with drunken assholes of all stripes.
Just a reference to the moron Pitt player who got drunk after the first game this season, got in his car, hit a pedestrian, and drove off, saying to the cops when confronted, “you can’t arrest me, I play for Pitt!”
@noah – i forgot about that – talk about doubling-down on failure: fail 1 – drinks/drives/crashes, fail 2 – cites Pitt football to weasel out of it.
