Last Friday I was on a street corner in Park Slope (Brooklyn) and observed 20+ unicyclists hauling down 5th ave. Some of those guys had some serious urban unis – wheels that looked to be about 30″ diameter! Makes me think, we really gotta get a unicycle on the next FOC. Stu?
I’d have trouble keeping up with y’uns on my 24″, though I’ve gone a marathon distance. Remember, there’s no coasting on a uni and no speed gain on a downhill. I’ll look into borrowing a larger one for the next FOC.
I’ve been meaning to try out bigger wheels, anyway. They make 26″, 28″ and 30″ unicycles. I’m guessing that the local experience base with using a unicycle for a 16-mile-each-way commute is, um, not robust, and seek to remedy that.
I was in Scholl’s again last night. The owner, who’s a veteran unicyclist, tried out a 36″ wheel last week and said it was very difficult to ride. Sure, lots of speed, but difficult to maneuver, and you need smooth, level pavement.
They also had another trashed 26″ uni. Very warped wheel. Even the seat doesn’t attach right anymore. Someone out there really knows how abuse unicycles.
