My bike was stolen on labor day. In its place, the thief left a somewhat broken Bianchi Timber Wolf.

Lucky for me: I spotted the dumbass teenager riding my bike down Liberty, chased him down, and faced him off with pepper spray until the cops came. My bike is mine again.

Lucky for you: Maybe I have your stolen bike too? Lemme know what it looks like, and it’s yours. Otherwise I guess I’ll fix it up and keep it as a backup for the next time my bike is stolen.

Congrats on getting your bike back. Please elaborate on the pepper spraying. Sounds like an adventure.

Thanks! It *was* an adventure! I was kind of absurdly pleased with myself, little girl-thing that I am. Here, I’ll copy my story over from another forum:

On Friday I saw a dude riding my bike down Liberty, and I tried to chase him down (thinking — what, I’d beat him up and take my bike back?). He quickly escaped down an alley (because, like an idiot, I shouted “Hey! That’s my bike!”), but in the meantime, I called the cops and started scoping out the neighborhood. I looped around and saw that the moron had come BACK to Liberty and gone into the Sunoco, leaving my bike out front. I went and sat on it with my pepper spray in hand and the police on the phone until they arrived, and that was pretty much it.

I don’t know WHY he didn’t run. He did come out, and we faced off for maybe ten minutes waiting for the cops, while he demanded that I give the bike back. I obviously said no, and I was very clear with him that the police were coming. At first he tried to convince me that it was his bike, and then he started telling me it was his sister’s. If he were any smarter than a stump, he could have told me he bought it off Craigslist the other day or something, and I MIGHT have believed him, but he wasn’t that bright. He made vague physical threats, but never actually advanced on me except to unscrew his light from my bike. I didn’t mace him or anything, just had it out and ready (though when he suggested he’d manhandle me off the bike, I did let him know that I would “pepper spray the shit” out of him :p)

When the cops got there they recognized his face right away — wasn’t the first time he’d been in trouble. He was in handcuffs when I left with my bike, but I think they just detained him for a little while. I’m pretty sure I saw him in the neighborhood yesterday. Just glad I have my bike back.

Why didn’t you just ride away while the kid was still inside?

Bearface, you are officially a badass.

But do be careful, glad it came out ok.

Noah, I was on the phone with the police the entire time. They told me to stay, so I stayed.

Wonderful story! There are a couple others on this board with a similar I’ll-be-damned-if-I-back-down-if-I’ve-gotten-this-far story. You’re in good company. Congratulations!

I don’t know what’s more fierce, your name or the story. I would suggest “barely a bear” for your gravatar.

That guy deserves everything he’s got coming to him…Being a thief, NOT just taking off after hearing ‘cops’, and not making up a story about the bike..Haha.Glad to see you got your bike back, and this idiot got what he deserved..Although, what do you think the penalty is for this particular incident? Will he go to court? Can/Will they be able to prosecute him or prove he stole it? Just curious how this would pan out..Better believe i’d be going to that court date if i was in your shoes!

I don’t think he was officially arrested — there wasn’t physical proof that he stole it, even though it was pretty clear that he did. I was asked if I wanted to prosecute, but frankly I just don’t have the time, and I don’t really want to start anything with the neighbors. He had a scare, he’s on the cops’ radar, and I got my bike back, which is good enough for now.

Got it. Also it gives you some leg to stand on if the kid were to confront you later. Cause I’m sure the cops won’t do shit to him. :(

Oh there’s a Rite Aid there? I thought it was just an enormous bus terminal.

That is to say, yes, I was trying to find a lumbar support for my chair at work and Office-Whatever next door was no help…

@sloaps — done and done, tho I don’t think it translates as well to tiny. Also, holy hell, double rainbow bear is full of awesomeness.

To view bigger: Click on the image, right click, View Image (might be a bit different in I.E.), and when it comes up by itself in the browser window, go to the address bar, and change the “s=80” to “s=640”. Enter.

Then just a couple of backs to get back to the msg board.
