Flock is the new and improved CM
I might not make it, depending on whether or not my wheel came in.
I'm planning on doing the July 22 Flock Ride but I noticed that the Critical Mass ride is meeting in the same place almost at the same time. Don't want to mix up the rides, or am I mistaken.
Flock is the new and improved CM

On the event calendar it says they are both meeting near each other. I agree Flock is way way way better.
Critical mass is always the last Friday of the month. The calendar is wrong; probably because there are 5 Fridays in July. See you at Flock on Friday!
I haven't been to a flock probably since last august. Hoping I can make this one.
I plan on riding Flock. The main reason I would not is if I get a couple of new riders in my West View bike pool who do not want to also go on the Flock ride & instead I would be guiding them home.
Next Friday (7/29) it might be worth having a couple of Flock regulars show up at Dippy, just in case. The last I heard, *nobody* showed up to ride CM one night. But we do get the occasional out-of-towner with wheels, so we ought to have it covered, just in case, and if we can get another Flock ride out of it, so much the better.
I'm planning on being there, barring any unforeseen circumstances. Is there any planned route yet?
The route hasn't been finalized yet, but it will be up on our facebook page the moment it's done. We will be ending at Penn Brewery though
@robjdlc We will be ending at Penn Brewery though
Excllent!
IU will probably be swimming in the river with teh triathlete on Herr's isloand, so that is very close.
Dont get off work till 730 so I'll probably just meet you guys at the Brewery.
Penn Brewery will be offering all Flock Party participants $3 Penn Brewery pints and free soda. They will also have ice water stations set up, as well as, exclusive bike parking.

Return Route(on the road with one long steady climb up Liberty Ave.)

I really hope my bike's ready for this tonight!
(They said "the end of the week," which I suspect is different for everyone - the end of my week is tomorrow, for some people it's today, etc)
also, the links above don't seem to be working. It says the route no longer exists.
Tried to do the OTB ride Wednesday night and it turned out to be completely comfortable. But today seems like a whole different level, don't know.
Those mapmyride links aren't working for me.
I'm 50/50 on being there. I'm not sure if the leave-work-early-cycle-home-let-dog-out-cycle-to-dippy is going to happen in this heat. (And by heat, I mean both work pressure and the fact that it's 55 gazillion degrees out there.)
The links work on the Facebook page.

Thanks Ian. It was pretty late when I was posting those.
Anyone running late can meet the Flock at the RiteAid on Baum around 7:15--we will be stopping there to buy some liquids.
Also, any tough riders want to haul the trailer with the stereo and water?
I'm bringing a plant mister filled with ice water.
I'm defiantly coming and I'm bringing Mrs. Marvelous I hope everyone doesn't drop out I know this is going to be a Flock to remember. Then you can brag how you survived the 100 degree flock.
We flocked to ice skating one time. Bloody cold that night, about 11 Fahrenheit.
I think I am getting stuck with the trailer--no tall bike today.
Nick, I'll swing by to get the trailer. See you about 5:30?
Kinda surprised that this is still on. There are more heat related deaths and illnesses than cold ones.
I've been riding all day and im still alive. Well barely alive.
Marko, don't worry about it. I don't want to make you ride back to Oakland tonight, and the tall bike needs a little maintenance that I wont be able to do in time.
for some reason, mr. marvelous, your post put a song in my head...
at first I was afraid, I was petrified.
kept thinking I could never live without AC inside.
but then I spent so many nights
thinking this heat is just so wrong
but I grew strong
and I learned how to carry on...
We (Flock) are a little concerned about the sudden storms and the extreme heat index. We'll have a decision regarding tonights ride shortly. Stay tuned.
I suspect the storms are going to be short lived and will bring down the temp a bit. I say thumbs up.
We are officially canceling the ride. We might be able to make it happen next week, but today is just too much with the heat and random weather. We'll let everyone know if we end up doing it next week.
Stay safe and hydrated out there everyone!
On the plus side, I don't feel bad for being kind of too lazy to make this
Thanks to all who did the non-ride ride. I hope you all had a good time on a different rout than we normally take. (SS trail through the waterfront, return Hi-Level bridge to Duck hollow)
Well just got back from the unsanctioned flock ride or this is not a flock ride-ride, the weather was great and the ride was unusual.
@ Nick thanks for coming down to let us know the ride was canceled, no apology necessary I'll be there next time.
@ ejwme lovely song. Thats exactly how I feel about the heat.
Rats, I should've showed up anyway. Saw the cancellation & headed to the movies instead.
same here! what did you see? i saw captain america.
The ride is re-scheduled for next Friday, July 29.
We aren't positive on what's going on for the post-ride party, but we will have that figured out before Friday.
@stefb: Meeks Cutoff @ Regent Square. I want to see Capt America, though.
@NickD, the Penn Brewery afterparty sounded like so much fun - any chance for a repeat?
Yeah, it was a bit sketchy going out with the lightning and ominous looking clouds, but the group that went out did have fun! I finally saw the trail past the Steelers training facility and rode past Sandcastle,Waterfront,Hi-Level Bridge (which was quite interesting.) Very high indeed. The Duck Hollow trail is quite nice too.
I kinda wish the decision had been made a bit sooner. By 5:37 (the earliest it showed up on either this thread or Facebook) I would have had a heckuva time booking it there from home (typical travel time 55 minutes, can get there in 40 with heavy work). I had pretty much given up on going when a decision hadn't been announced by 5:20, for fear of showing up too late for a non-ride ride.
New thread for July 29? Or rename this one?
In any case, the 7/29 Flock ride did not make it to the Walls Are Bad events listing. That would be a great place to promote it!
Stu, I personally apologize for the delay in cancellation. We were having a hard time making the decision (I really didn't want to cancel it), and I got stuck at the store late.
In the future, cancellations will be made further in advance.
As for the after-party on Friday, we are waiting to hear back from Penn Brew. No matter what, there will be some type of post-ride event somewhere.
I'll be showing off my fancy new wheel this friday! If it hadn't been rescheduled, I"d have missed it altogether!
Just a head up, that area of Oakland is a freaking mess. I guess they're doing some Batman scenes in the area over the weekend and were setting up today. It took me 45 minutes to get from Schenley Drive to Penn Ave on my motorcycle, and that was even with lane splitting at stop lights.
45 minutes to get from Schenley Drive to Penn Ave
That is about the perfect pace for flock
We should take a detour and try to see something.
Dammit, I really want to Flock but based on recent history I don't dare venture further than 50ft away from an available toilet... this sucks.
That is gross.
*shart*
Gross would be buying a bike seat with a big cutout and running a pipe to my panniers.
Even grosser? no panniers.
even grosser: the pipe lets out onto the rear wheel. no fender.
Oh man. I believe there is a stomach bug going around. I have had a few patients trying to blame it on medications. Feel better
i was hoping it was just something i ate, but after 36+ hours i'm losing hope. i feel 100% fine aside from one little detail...
well, back off the topic of my digestive functions, looks like it was a fun flock???
It was another great Flock Party.
I had a great time. This was my first group ride and I can't wait to do it again. Hopefully next time I can stay upright the whole time.
Yes, lot's of fun.
dvilliotti, was that you in front of the Walgreens stop? Clip-in problem? Happens once to everybody, no big. Although, if you're going to fall over, the best place to do it is probably surrounded by a mass of cyclists
And there are craploads of bunnies on the S.side trail at 9:30 at night. How come this has not been mentioned? Deadly.
I was stuck at work until 11 o'clock. Bummed I missed it.
That was me. I was signaling the turn then had to brake and I grabbed too much of the front brake and I'm pretty sure I pulled the handle bar left too. I was just happy I didn't cause anyone else to go down when I did.
Those bunnies scare the hell out of me. They just start at you with their souless eyes and you never know which direction they're going to run. It seems like there are a bunch of baby bunnies this year.
Yeah south side trial is the worst as far as bunny population goes. The other day I had no less than 15 run past me between where i got on near REI and 18th St. I usually say BUNNYBUNNYBUNNY if i don't have a bell, in order to try to get then to run in front of me sooner than too late.
hey guys that ride was fantastic. It was the first ride I had been on since the viking spring ride. It was also the first ride that I have been on that I didnt feel like I was the one holding everyone up.
Nick - I love the new sound system
Marko - it was great to see you again
Rubber factory - was that you in the mancini shirt? I meant to say hi and just never got the chance.
The whole ride was fantastic and just served to remind me what a great biking culture we have here. I always go to these rides with a little bit of hesitation (being a huge old fat guy that wheezes on the up hills) but I always feel so great when im on the ride and i miss it when it ends.
One thing I didnt miss were 3-4 thousand gnats I swallowed on ss trail to the waterfront.
cant wait to ride with you guys again!
Gnats are totally high in protein and fiber.
Those S.side hobos could be living so large on stewed Lapin and foraged greens. My apologies in advance to the veggies.

I was really looking forward to this, but something came up at the last minute and I couldn't make it. Now I have to wait what, another month?
Not necessarily.
First Friday is Midnight Mass, a fast ride through the city at night.
Second Friday (and probably closest to the topic at hand here) is Flock All Night, a late evening (10pm) slow-paced ride through the city.
Plenty of other rides, though not associated with Flock.
Midnight Mass is now Midnight Flock--just a name change to help drop any association with CM.
It isn't official yet, but Flock at Night This month will be a little different--pushed back time, different meeting place, and best of all a theme (kind of)!
