Ok, that didn't work. Advice on editing to post that photo?

Make sure in Flickr that you click the "all sizes" (I think that's what it is called) tab at the top and grab the url from there. It'll probably end in .jpg

The http: part needs to be in quotation marks ""

(everything after the src= including the .jpg)

And you need to close the IMG tag with a >

jeffinpgh
2010-06-03 15:45:16

oh, and you also need the quote before http.

rachel_ding
2010-06-03 15:46:06

well... once you hit "all sizes" you still need to choose the size photo you want and right click (PC) or CONTROL + click (MAC) to "view image" in order to get the correct URL...

rachel_ding
2010-06-03 15:48:39

First, you need the url to the source of the image (should end in ".jpg", ."jpeg", ".gif" or something like that).

Second, put the URL in quotation marks.

After the weather broke this spring I fixed up an old woman's mountain bike and started riding the trails, first time on a bike in decades. Made me go and get a new hybrid.

I ride the trails, the streets make me nervous.

The Somali families are also about the best neighbors ever. I don't know them very well at all, but every interaction I've had with the kids or adults has been totally respectful and positive. They're some of the nicest kids down at Arsenal Park when we're playing polo, and totally hilarious any time I've struck up conversation with them. Yesterday one of them was asking me about my flip flop hub on my bike actually.

YES and YES!!! I've seen the kids flock around on their bikes too! That's awesome!! Although.... their bikes are a lot nicer than mine, haha!

Very happy to find all of this out about L-Ville and the Somali Refugees. I lived in Polish Hill before, which while I loved it, it was very quiet with no much neighbor interaction, except for when I saw people going down to Gooskies, The Rock Room, and even the Warsaw Tavern (old days).

Coolness! I'm gonna pay more attention now when I see the kids on their bikes!!

bjanaszek
2010-06-05 14:40:35

Eric, you probably live like two doors down from me. Do you have BikePGH stickers on your vehicles?

I never thought that Baker was that bad, but yeah, those guys seem to be revving their engines more annoyingly than ever. Haven't thought of a constructive way of telling them to stop being dicks yet though.

Man, if those guys refrained from revving their engines and people didn't have never ending barking dogs, M'side would be golden

PS I'm in the house that had the desk sitting out in front of it for several months, and now there is a refrigerator. We're classy like that

sgtjonson
2010-06-05 15:08:02

don't worry. our grass gets cut once a week maybe and then it's a million feet long. when we're home and it's light out we're either riding or it's raining. i can't wait until school is out. i feel like parents and kids stare at our house cause of the long grass.

our back yard is a mud pit. if you ever ride down swan alley between hampton and bryant, and see a brindle boxer/pit trying to jump a 6 foot privacy fence in the back and the neighbor's 4 foot chainlink fence on the other side, that is my house. my dog wants to give your face a million kisses.

i do love living in morningside. over on our side it's pretty quiet.

stefb
2010-06-05 15:46:39

Yep, a maroon mini van and tan sedan with a roof rack.

There will be no complaints from me about random not-normally-outside objects left outside for an inordinate amount of time, nor the barking of dogs, I'm probably more guilty than the lot of yinz.

I also own a motorcycle, but the stock exhaust is in place, and I rarely rev its single cylinder past idle in the neighborhood.

Morningside is a great neighborhood, if we can get some improved cycling routes at the exits (Baker and Stanton), it will be just about perfect.

eric
2010-06-05 15:59:13

Yeah, I think I've seen it. It is kind of a dirt bike? I don't think I've ever heard it. Only the ear piercing ones from across the street. But yeah, it isn't half bad. Nobody has peed in my front door or anything yet :P

That was taken on May 20 of this year. It's Glacier National Park, only about 60 miles east of where I live ... and about 4,000 feet higher. This is a 30-mile climb. Couldn't make it to the top because of an avalanche. :)

alankhg,

I "live" in Whitefish (I have a Whitefish address, but live about 15 miles out of town toward Olney ... and I'm living in Pittsburgh for the next month or two before I head back). I race for Great Northern Cycles out of Whitefish.

Haha -- no, you will not see any snow at that elevation, just over 3,000 feet, this time of year. Not to mention it was one of the most mild winters on record. Which way are you headed out of Whitefish? If you've got any questions about riding out there or things to do in town, let me know! :)

jcme

Jason, I'm headed west via the Northern Tier route which goes up to Eureka then down toward Libby and beyond.

A few things I'm curious about that you may or may not know about:

-how likely do you think the Empire Builder is to be on time going west?

-are bears an issue on the campgrounds to the west? If so, are campgrounds equipped with boxes for food or should I be prepared to do the tree-rope thing?

-any advice on cheap lodging in town if Couchsurfing falls through?

-I've never ridden the Empire Builder, but I bet it'll be pretty close to on time. That's the only commuter train that goes through there and with it being the 100-year anniversary of GNP, I have a feeling they're really trying to keep things on the up-and-up.

-I'd definitely bring a length of rope, about 20-30 feet, to hang bear bags until you get out of Montana.

- There is no hostel or cheap backpacker's inn in Whitefish, unfortunately. There is a campground on the lake. I would suggest trying to CouchSurf. It shouldn't be too hard; during the winter I got lots of requests, but people always found houses closer to the mountain than mine.

You're in for an awesome ride! Be aware: 93 between Whitefish and Eureka is not super bike friendly. Be prepared for little to no shoulder and lots of trucks. That 60-mile stretch sort of sucks. Once you hit Eureka and head south to Libby around Lake Kookanusa and the Libby Dam, the ride gets amazing! Enjoy!

Hello danielson, I'm no stranger to Bellevue, either. It's on my way between McCandless & Moon, which I do a few times a month (via West View, the closed bridge on Linc/Calif, & the McKees Rocks Bridge). I'm usually on an old Ross or a Raleigh Record, often wearing an orange safety vest. Pic of me about halfway down Page 1 of this thread. Wave if you see me!

Here's how to get a pic in here. First, make sure it's on Flickr or someplace where you can get a real URL for the pic, starting with "http" and ending in ".jpg"

Then paste that in here, as follows, only use angle brackets in place of the square brackets:

Well, welcome speedy. Faster would be a road bike, or at least a hybrid. But I also think a lot of faster comes from the rider. Be careful speeding on the trails though- with walkers, kids, and dogs speeding along can be dangerous for all involved.

Over the weekend I saw a bunch of people on the river trails. I think I saw you East Ender, and someone else shouted 'Hi Bikeygirl" around the trail by the NorthSide Casino area, but didn't know who it was.

Pseudacris and ejwme, I just caught up on this thread and saw the Ali Farka Toure and Toumani Diabate references.

Did you know Vieux Farka Toure (Ali's son, also amazing) played in Pittsburgh several months ago? It was an amaaazing show, and it was sad that only like 20 or 30 people were there.

The Rex theater in the South Side. Probably the best guitarmanship I've ever seen in person, and I was like 5 feet in front of him.

neil, your right knee looks like you probably have a bit of arthritis. assuming you do, does cycling help with the pain? i work in orthopaedics, and i'm sorry, i can't help noticing people's hips and knees and posture/gait associated with arthritis.

stefb
2010-12-22 11:18:56

Stefb, both knees are knocked, the left since birth, the right from both birth and repeated falls. I also have mild scoliosis that looks worse after a long ride - like the 35 miles into Philadelphia the day of the photo.

Cycling doesn't help with the pain, but it is a less painful exercise. I prefer hiking, but that's work compared to pedaling.

Let's just say that Ibuprofen is my friend. :-)

add multiple biking disciplines to the mix and the minimum can explode. for example i currently have:

downhill bike

freeride bike

24" dirt jumper/urban bike

hardtail cross country trail (not race) bike

single speed road bike (summer only)

geared road bike

spare road bike (shared)

and this year i am buying at least two of the following:

cross bike or touring bike

cargo bike or nice trailer (easily costs as much as a cheap cargo bike) for the above

26" dirt jump/urban

full suspension xc bike or 29er (GASP!!)

and i'm sure i will still find things that none of them are quite perfect for and want more.

stef currently has:

single speed road bike

cross country hardtail

geared road bike

spare road bike (shared)

and will most likely be buying a cross bike or touring bike

and may be buying in the next year or so:

full suspension xc bike

freeride bike

bikes are the best addiction ever.

Storytime: As of about a month ago, I didn't know how how to ride a bike at all. I started a new job in February and the PAT route I relied on was promptly canceled. I started walking from Polish Hill to Millvale daily. I quickly got sick of the noisy traffic on the 40SB. With some help from my girlfriend (and much from the interwebs) I gradually taught myself how to ride. I commuted to work for the first time yesterday. It was awesome.

Yeah. It's more or less the beginning of a trail that winds its way through a valley and eventually to the mountain itself. Unfortunately bikes are a no no :( which sucks because it takes over four hours to walk it one direction and you can't camp in the park itself. There are other paths on the other side, through Gifford Pinchot National Forest, but I never got around to exploring them as Mt. St. Helens was three hours from Seattle. Welcome to the forums @humblesage. Is your BMX customized for commuting?

pseudacris
2011-07-19 16:48:18

Thanks for the welcome.

As for customization:

I kinda made some weird build choices with my current bike. And BMX building is really a series of compromises once you start to rely on one for transportation. I come from a race background, but race frames on the street can be a risk without spending mad cash. So my commuter is a full-on CrMo frame/forks/bars job with really tough street/park trick components. It's heavy, and with tires full of air rides like a rolling brick. You have to be committed I guess. This setup has lasted me four years though with only tires, brake pads and brake cables needing replaced.

It takes a certain kind of person to build and ride a BMX some 10-20 miles/day, but I enjoy it. It's what you make it. At the age of 29 it's time for BMX bikes to start to play secondary role, and while I'll keep one (at least) in my quiver at all times, I'm kinda excited to move into the fixed gear world this fall. (It's nice to know there are companies making faster track style bikes that can stand up to a nut job like me finally.) :)

Welcome West Suburbs! need more people from out that way. Awesome about the bmx, badass bikes. This is the kind of place where no one is going to have any expectations about what kind of bike you ride, just ride. Sounds like you have the right idea. Hi all, I just joined today.

Name: Michael

Neighborhood: Morningside. I'm new to the Burgh, having just moved here in December. Loving it, though!

Type of riding: I commute to work every day - only a 15 minute ride from here to Bakery Square in Larimer/East Liberty. I'd love to do more recreational riding, though.

# of bikes you own: 1

Music that you are listening to right this second: Reliving my youth and listening to the Fixx's "Reach the Beach" album.

Fav picture of you on a bike (optional): No pics of me riding, but here's my bike:

This is my bike - had it since 1998. A '98 Gary Fisher Zebrano. I love it and it's served me well on road and off, in the city and in the country, for over a dozen years now. The gearshift's been replaced, but everything else is original. Man, I love this bike!

This post is waaay overdue since I've met many of you, and heard of a lot of you from mr. marvelous. I don't get out riding as much as I would like, but I do enjoy the Flock rides and taking off on my bike for a date day with mr. m. Planning on working out on the trainer this winter and building up some strength. I've heard that spin classes are good for cold weather also. I am just an okay rider, I have the muscle to get up some good size hills, but sometimes the descents kind of terrify me...something about barreling down a hill with nothing but a helmet to protect me on a road filled with pot holes, debris, and the occasional speeding car going around a blind turn... I enjoy keeping myself in once piece :)

My bike is a Trek FX 7.2. For the riding I do, I think it serves me well. I made a few upgrades but not too much of an investment since I would like to eventually get a bike that is more fun.

@Dave it's worth a try! Won't cost you more than a cog and lockring. I also recommend something to keep your feet attached to the pedals.

dmtroyer
2011-10-10 20:31:51

@troyer

Already one step ahead of you. The bike came with a flip-flop hub, cog, and lock ring. I got some toe clips, but quickly abandoned those as I need some practice getting my foot into them without falling over.

chemicaldave
2011-10-10 22:52:13

@Chemicaldave: I have an Earl as well. (Black though, and I'm not really riding it now cause I upgraded to a faster ride.) It rides fixed nice. To me, toe clips are a must. And you do need some practice with them. Totally worth it once you get the hang of it. Then again, you posted this 3 weeks ago, so you probably have a method by this point. :)

humblesage
2011-11-06 00:53:04

Yes. I went fixed, tried the toe clips, couldn't get my other foot in with it fixed. I switched back to singlespeed so I can coast down fast hills easier.

Thanks, guys.....thanks again to you Erok for helping me get my stolen bike back back 09 or 10 or whenever it was....I seem to recall you had a sighting of my stolen bike, didn't you? Yeah, I have no idea how those stories about Lawrenceville came together like that for this week's paper...I feel a little weird about it. I'm not sure whatever happened to the mission to establish a new hostel in Pgh. I know there were some fundraisers for it in 09 but then it seemed to go quiet. Obviously not the best time to pursue something like that.

pseudacris
2012-04-05 15:01:30

I don't have any experience in that part of the state (never lived there, just visit). I had a road bike in NH in the summer of 2004 and did some riding on the Kancamagus Highway (nice but strenuous) and east of Woodstock (also nice, with very few motorists). There is also a crit on a Nascar track in the middle of the state that I did twice - fun and pretty safe. Last summer was mountain biking only around North Conway - really nicely sculpted trails.

To post photos, you'll want to get the URL for the image itself (i.e., just the image, not a page with the image on it), which will usually end in .jpg. In most browsers you would be able to get that by going to the Facebook link you posted above, right-clicking on the photo itself, and selecting "Copy Image URL."

So it theoretically should work if it looks like this but with the [] brackets replaced with <> brackets: [img src="http://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/6294_526728949461_6992064_n.jpg"]

(@ed)I am a looney tune, and I just, I just, (@rubber)I wish every night was the bikefest party and I don't understand why everyone bailed when the beer ran out!

And I am going to buy a handlebar bag specifically to hold gum, in the future. (Just kidding, I usually hate gum, must be the weather) I can't believe I had to settle for someone's chocolate soymilk! (Actually, that was awesome) I also wish the 1 a.m. bike ride was every night. (Just kidding, good night zzzz)

Glad to be here(-er than I was before...)!

I'll ride around the city to get to places that I can't get by trail but what I'm really interested in is biking in the South Hills. I see people doing it on West Liberty/Washington Rd. but it seems pretty scary to me. Also, I'd love to get downtown by bike without getting on the T or a bus. What's the best and easiest way to do it?

2013-06-28 15:46:42
The best and easiest, though mildly illegal, is the Wabash Tunnel. For the full story, go to this three-year-old thread, which we keep updated as new info emerges.
stuinmccandless
2013-06-28 17:33:33
But the Wabash Tunnel dumps you on Saw Mill Run Blvd. Isn't that horrible for bikes? (Granted, it would be nice if ever the city build a parallel trail from the Wabash to somewhere else.)
steven
2013-06-28 18:07:53
I might make a trip out there, ride Wabash, continue straight at the end, go through the bushes to the dead railroad, and walk the bike south/east/upstream until I'm past the scrapyard, then drop back down to Hargrove Street when the dead track joins the live one, remount, and ride to West Liberty. I'll bring the helmet cam.

I'm beginning to think that "You can't get there from here." At least I can't! I think that when I want to get to the "other side," I will do what I normally do and that's drive to the South Side, park under the Birmingham Bridge and go from there. Hopefully someone will create an easy, magical way to get downtown from the South Hills.

Welcome all! Erica, don't discount the convenience of the bus racks. I ride in from Robinson, which from what I am hearing must be easier than the South hills. But having the bus option makes it mentally much easier to ride in knowing that I have that option to bail with the bus and get home. Don't give up, you can do it!
edmonds59
2013-06-29 08:00:32
Good point. The bus-bike combo doesn't even have to get you that close to home. You have a bike! Any bus that gets you through the Mt Washington Transit Tunnel has solved the hardest part of the trip south. Haven't used a bus rack? This video will prove helpful. Mildly silly, but informative, and only two minutes long.

At the Bike Pgh Annual Meeting earlier this week, I realized that there are STILL people from this board for whom I know only user names, not real names (or occasionally the reverse). So I jumped on the introductions thread to refresh my memory. The first page or two of introductions was like a reunion with old friends, but old friends who seem to be less visible than they once were. What's become of some of the old regulars? Brian J, OhioJeff, Myddrin (still around sometimes, it seems), RoadKillen, Spinballer, the "other Stef...." etc. Did they assume new usernames in the site redesign? Leave the region? Just move on? I am just curious. It was nice to see all those old names again. It really did seem like I was reconnecting (my memory at least) with old friends. Hope they are all doing well, whereever they may be.

Born in Altoona, raised in suburbs of Pittsburgh, and I lived in Reading, PA for 2 years with the company I work for now remotely here in Pittsburgh. I didn't cycle when I lived out there, but there is plenty of beautiful rural farm roads with plenty of good road cycling out in Eastern PA such as Berks and Lancaster County.

I should check this thread more often. Welcome to @bleber! Not that many of us commuting in from McCandless. What path(s) do you take into town? And have we passed one another on the street somewhere? You'll occasionally see me duking it out with inbound traffic on McKnight, but I'm more often on Babcock (S of Three Degree) or PerryHwy.

@StuInMcCandless: Thanks! I either take the P13 on Ferguson to the E. busway stop at Summerlea St (and bike the remainder to CMU); do the entire ride by bike; or drive. Always trying to do less of the third option. I don't recall seeing you, but I likely will as I get out more this Spring.

We share the same route from the 40th St Bridge to the corner of Babcock & Thompson Run. I go that way most days it is or has been dry. I have a mud path to traverse on the way to that point, so use Perry those days. I'm often on either an O12 (inbound) or a 12 if the weather is uncooperative. Since I'm starting by the Perry/Perrymont corner, it's just as easy to bike into West View, so you might not see me at all, but it's good to know there is at least one more doing a similar commute!

Welcome, John! There are several people on the message board from that end of town. I too am a commuter, though I live north and don't get east all that often. There are plenty of group rides to meet up with, many but not all advertised on the board. Keep an eye out for the couple of riding games we have here, too, Tag-o-Rama and Wheelset of Fortune. I've been biking to work off and on from various neighborhoods to Downtown since 2009. The cycling bug bit me at church camp when I was little and I continued with it in the Boy Scouts and Venturing until I came to Pitt. Didn't bike too much during that time, but getting a job Downtown and a need for cheap transportation got me back into it. Currently, I only have time to bike once a week or so due to the time involved and being a new father/husband, but I love every minute of it when I can! Haven't posted to this thread I didn't have a picture of me on a bike I liked. Thanks to fine folks at thick bikes for this one. Urban riding, mostly commuting with some erranding in the mix (and am hoping a lot more in the future). Generally annoying cat-6 racer, jail trail vs. roadies, Forbes/fifth vs. cars. 1+? is complicated. The 1 that works is the backup of the backup, a too short, remarkably heavy and clunky huffy mountain bike that doesn't fit me and with a fairly comical super-wide comfort seat fitted. The +? is in the probably vain hope I might resurrect the old trek 700 that I pronounced dead back in the polar vortex. Will probably try a new chain, hope for the best, and if that's a non-starter give up on it. The clown bike that (mostly) carried me through from then till now, sadly, probably even more dead. After putting the message here, do you take dead bikes to freeride, leave out for the garbage man, something else?? At some point I'll get something nice and take care of it. Maybe even the bike in the picture.

Welcome! Lots of all types on this board so don't feel intimidated by being a "novice", and in fact being new to biking helps us reconnect with some of the challenges that some of us don't even remember any more. Your input is much appreciated here, and don't feel bashful about asking questions. Something you may want to try is a 412-Flock ride. The next one is next Friday. https://www.facebook.com/flockofcycles It's a slow paced social ride of ten miles or so and is intended to help people get comfortable riding on city streets. It's also a great way to meet other cyclists and ask questions, seek advice and whatnot.

I figure I have to follow up on Rebus' post, being another rider who just (48 hours ago, in fact) moved to Pittsburgh from Boston MA. Name: Ornoth Neighborhood: Squ'ill Type of riding: I'm a road MAMIL. Do lots of endurance/distance road riding, both solo and club rides. Lots of centuries, lots of charities, some commuting, sometimes brevets. No racing, no offroad, and not much into bike paths. Bikes: 2013 Roubaix named R2-Di2. Beater 2006 Roubaix called the Plastic Bullet. And a 2008 Bike Friday Pocket Rocket for travel. Favorite pic of self on bike: Same as my profile pic. Taken during one of my 14 Pan-Mass Challenge rides for Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Ornoth Quote: (Adapted from Ronnie Coleman) "Errybuddy wanna be a cyclist -- ain't nobuddy wanna climb these big-ass hills! I'll do it tho!" I'll have tons of questions as I get ramped up for my first season in Pittsburgh, but my most immediate need over the winter is a good 20-30 mile circuit near Squirrel Hill. I'm assuming the shortest distance out of the city and onto quieter stretches of country roads is eastward, but Strava's heatmap implies there are limited options in that direction. Lincoln Road or Frankstown Road (380) out of Homewood; maybe Penn Ave thru Wilkinsburg; Brinton out of Edgewood. I don't mind trafficky urban riding, but it doesn't make for a great training ride. Where should I go to pound out some solid wintertime miles? Reply here or PM. Thanks, and I hope to see you out on the roads this spring!

@Ornoth: Another recommendation for Oscar Swan's book (and, if you have trouble finding a copy, I've got one you can borrow in exchange for a hefty security deposit ;-) ). That'll give you a great introduction to road riding around these here parts. For reasonably pain-free riding out of the East End, I recommend heading north, rather than east. Once you cross the Allegheny River, you're pretty much spoiled for choice...almost any turn off Freeport Rd, for example, will take you somewhere interesting. Easy variable-length loops can be constructed by heading out the 62nd St Bridge through Etna to Saxonburg Blvd, heading north until you get bored, then turning left and returning via Middle Rd, or right and returning through all sorts of interesting possibilities. Regarding rando and winter riding: you can sign up for the Pittsburgh Randonneurs mailing list at http://pittsburghrandonneurs.com/contact-us/, and/or feel free to contact me via email: dan dot blumenfeld at gmail dot com. Welcome!

Welcome, Ornoth. I'm a MAMNIL, just a commuter cyclist. I live 10 miles north of town, so I could suggest out-and-back via two of my usual commutes. Get to and cross the 40th St Bridge. I use the upstream sidewalk but have duked it out with traffic in the right lane occasionally. Right at the end of the bridge. Ignore the bike lane. It's downhill, and you're making a left at the bottom. Grant Avenue to North Avenue through Millvale. A couple of mild bends/turns generally to the left puts you on Babcock Blvd. There are a several right-turn-only lanes where you go straight. I expect to get at least one angry suburbanite give me a horn at one of these. Often I get lucky and enjoy a quiet ride. Left onto Three Degree Road. (Officially, Babcock makes a right here.) Three Degree is short but nasty, only a quarter mile but 6% uphill grade, curving right, four lanes, no shoulder, and you're making a left at the top. I generally claim the right lane on any four-lane road. Left at top onto Perry Highway, pointing you back southward. I employ a staircase in West View to get me past a dogleg turn on a steep hill. 53 concrete steps and 200 yards of pushing the bike through the woods beats a half mile of general nastiness, and lets me exercise a different set of muscles for five minutes. Perry eventually becomes Perrysville Avenue back into the city. Lots of variations on ways to get from the top corner of Perrysville at Federal. One is to plummet down Federal, but there's a stop sign 3/4 way down. Possible to hit 45+ coming down that hill, but it's trafficky and the pavement sucks. Near the river, I'd jump on the trail, roll out to the 31st St Bridge, and find one of fortyleven ways to get back to Squill from there. All told, about 25 miles, and I do this every day, one direction or the other. At the Babcock-3D corner, you're about a mile from my house.
