I’m of two minds about Alleycats. On one hand, they are fundamentally races and not puzzles — to take pure speed out of the equation largely eliminates the intent.
On the other hand, some people are going to take it too seriously to the point that they’re willing to risk their lives for the fleeting prestige or minimal prizes inherent. Maybe some people don’t think it’s really a risk at all, given how uncommon serious injury is in them (which I was just thinking earlier this week is semi-miraculous, actually).
Ultimately I’m not sure what the answer is. I’m certainly not going to stop competing in them, but I’ve always been cautious almost to a fault…At the very least, I think that organizers should make the inherent threats involved more clear.
