Yeah – it’s not a simple topic. For one thing, I firmly believe that I’m a safer, more alert rider because I’ve done a number of races. On the other hand, there is certainly a kind of race-day heroics that is really dangerous.
I would also say that most experienced riders know that even a minor accident, like a fall in a corner, can ruin their chances of winning. So I guess it’s the newbies that are most at risk. This guy was apparently pretty fast, but fast doesn’t mean you fully understand the risks.
I just hope we don’t see an alleycat crackdown. If somebody wants to risk their safety, I say let them (if they are fully aware of the risks).
