Black Monk Time, the Monks
First Daze Here, Pentagram
Scrabbling at the Lock, The Ex
Jailbreak, Thin Lizzy
Clandestino, Manu Chao
Aladdin Sane, David Bowie
and as always, lots and lots of Minutemen and Woody Guthrie
Music?
How about a little off-topic discussion? I'm looking for some interesting music, so in an effort to cull some ideas, how about we post what's been in heavy rotation recently? I'll start:
Curse Your Branches, David Bazan
My Maudlin Career, Camera Obscura
Everything All the Time, Band of Horses
Fantasies, Metric
Sound of Silver, LCD Soundsystem
In case it isn't obvious, I'm a sucker for good indie pop.
Haven't rotated much in recently.
Aether Shanties: Abney Park
Greatest Hits: Fatboy Slim
Demon Days: Gorillaz
The Legend of Johnny Cash: (guess who?)
Some glam compilation picked up at Starbucks
Good Times, Bad Times: Godsmack
plus a few fave individual tracks from Moby, Linkin Park, Social D, Charlie Daniels
Here is my list of bands from today so far
Pearls and brass(from PA)
kimono draggin'
Into another
Hound dog taylor
minor threat
The melvins
For something a little heavy, recommend anything by The Black Angels, esp "The Sniper at the Gates of Heaven".
Bouncy pop, Mint Royale - "Show me"
Excellent soul, Raphael Saddiq - "100 yard dash"
+1 on the LCD Soundsystem, too.
Here's my feb/march playlist:
West Coast, Junk Culture
Flotilla EP, Flotilla
Black Noise, Pantha Du Prince
Heartland, Owen Pallett
Plastic Beach, Gorillaz
The Golden Archipelago, Shearwater
Measure, Field Music
One Life Stand, Hot Chip
Heligoland, Massive Attack
Psychic Hearts, Thurston Moore
Conumber, Squarepusher
Maxinquaye, Tricky
Mars Audiac Quinet, Stereolab
lol... classic rock!
oh, and I still throw on the new Midlake album, "The Courage of Others" fairly often.
Midlake, yeah, just started hearing that!
There's lots of sets from defunct Pgh clubs like the Electric Banana, The Decade, etc. in my earlier link.
lol... classic rock!
was that directed at my thin lizzy post?
dude, they rule...
Check out "Six feet under". They do a metal cover of jailbreak.
return of the rentals - the rentals
downward is heavenward - hum
random old school b-sides - radiohead
a bunch of random songs by a buffalo-area band called the gifted children
blondertongueaudiobaton - swirlies
yank crime - drive like jehu
bizarre ride ii the pharcyde - pharcyde
all balls don't bounce - aceyalone
washing machine - sonic youth
hmm. my taste is a bit old, huh?
+1 for curse your branches. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPtONN2BiPo
the weakerthans - live at the burton cummings theatre (released 2010-03-23)
http://www.kingsroadmerch.com/the-weakerthans/view/?id=1257&cid=85
Animal Collective's Strawberry Jam was awesome, although I can't get behind MPP like everyone else.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TswM9XcGd7g
I've been doing a lot of lo-fi Youtube music.
I really liked the Band of Horses soundtrack to the Danny MacaSkill vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z19zFlPah-o
The music in this is cool. Even pole dancing can be made into art. If this woman and Danny MacAskill ever had kids? The rest of could just surrender now. (note "butterfly ribs" at 2:10)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6KnUW9N3Zo
I've been net surfing up my knowledge of music.
One example is that when the DC Trip a bunch of bands I didn't know (Mogwai, Melvins, Sage Francis), I could check them out. Heard about the Melvins for decades, now.
Learning the history of early jazz (jazz rocked in 1927. Really.), ragtime, and blues, by reading Wiki and catching the tunes mentioned on Youtube.
Jelly Roll Morton claims to have invented jazz music. Who's to argue?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4n20U8hWHSE
Blues: Son House, because someone had to teach Robert Johnson.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jN5vqEyV7g&feature=related
Rock: Nirvana's here for the dancing guy. I bet he rides.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKI8d2ZeCOQ&feature=PlayList&p=173196A2BBFBF1A5&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=57
I guess I'm a geezer now, cause I'm getting to be a sucker for gorgeous tunes. Here's three for the sweet side.
Hello Saferide: I can't believe I'm posting something called "Twee pop" here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEqHN4nyJc4
Cure: Someone has to wear black and break hearts.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbFD0xQtjS4
To us geezer boomers, "Beck" means this guy. Tal looks like she's cutting 9th grade algebra to play surf-punk, but she plays like Charles Mingus.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIFFRHBCPzA
These are the tunes/vids I've sent people recently.
@ willie
Houndog Taylor ROCKS.
He's why I have chairs in my living room
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX9UG8rqRRQ
Indie rules! 4 CDs I recently downloaded:
Beach House
Broken Bells
JJ (chill!)
Yeasayer
I'm a Sirius XMU Listener - great indie station, great DJs, listen online, not just your car.
Yo bjanaszek, I saw Metric at Mr. Smalls sold out show - awesome! Proud owner of a Metric hoody.
For online listening free, try radioio.com - select the indie station - nice.
If you like MGMT, they have posted their entire CD online. Stream it at whoismgmt.com It's worth a listen.
was that directed at my thin lizzy post?
no, no. my weak list looks like i haven't bought a record since 1995...
I'll add
Sugarcubes, Stick Around for Joy
Polvo, Exploded Drawing
I highly recommend last.fm. It's like Pandora radio, but British and better. It's much more user-generated than Pandora, so the range of music is way more insane. I've been rocking out to some radio station tags... bhangra, aniceto molina (columbian-via-mexico cumbia awesomeness), afrobeat radio, and the slits radio is really good.
As far as bands.. pixies ("doolittle" and "bossanova" in particular, fever ray (solo project from the lady from the knife. if you like metric you may like both the knife and fever ray), gang gang dance (half melodic/half freak-out indie/electro/world), prince's "purple rain," heart's "dreamboat annie," dark dark dark, and manu chao. I cannot recommend manu chao enough to everyone in the world.
St. Vincent: Actor
Aloha: Home Acres
Hieroglyphics: Third Eye Vision
Jay-Z: The Blueprint 3
Talk Talk: Laughing Stock
I'd really like to hear those new Beach House and Yeasayer records.
Sloaps, I love Polvo. I got to see them live a year and a half ago in Seattle and it was amazing. I only wish they had played more songs from Today's Active Lifestyles.
I'm also addicted to this Liars video. Good song. Better video: http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid1813626064?bctid=66845385001
Whoa. Polvo is still around? I was listening to them in the early 90s Yes, I am that old.
I just discovered Metric via someone's reviews from SXSW. Me likey.
I should add that thanks to my kids, we rock out to They Might Be Giants. We just saw their kids show at the New Hazlett theater last weekend, and it was awesome. Easily one of the top five shows I've seen, perhaps just right behind Pavement during their Wowee Zowee tour.
Mick, the Band of Horses/Danny Macaskill flick is really amazing. I could watch that all day.
Hounddog Taylor = great. My boyfriend LOVES his music.
I've had my classical/Pink Martini-like music Pandora station on heavy rotation as I'm working on a long paper with mind-numbingly long citations.
Pink Martini = a musical group from Portland, OR, not an alcoholic beverage.
Oh, and I forgot...I've also been listening to a bluegrass-ish station on Pandora.
Mick thank you for that amazing video. I think I might grab my folding chair from my basement and practice my geetar tonight.
as far as jelly roll morton
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tislJu9Dls
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO0fmkSA80o
Awesome! Haven't listened to Jelly Roll Morton in a while.
since no one's brought her up...maybe the best live act I've ever seen was Neko Case.
http://www.last.fm/music/Neko+Case/_/Knock+Loud
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DucDgbLPYUI
+1 for Neko, I've seen her a few times and she's always amazing.
I saw these guys opening for Donora a few weeks ago and thought they were great: http://www.myspace.com/savoiradore
There are a lot of Pittsburgh bands (and bands they pull in from the area) well worth checking out... go do it!
Local Bands:
Donora is fun - nice to know you agree Salty.
Blindsider kicks butt
Other Great indie:
Fleet Foxes
The Big Pink
Surfer Blood
Besnard Lakes
Best Coast
Arctic Monkeys
Atlas Sound - yes!
Band of Horses - me too.
Classic, older, but still great Indie:
Sigur Ros
Midlake - yes, thanks for reminding me.
Interpol
The Arcade Fire
Sonic Youth, of course
Gotta mention Radiohead
Burst of ego here.
This is me:
http://web.mac.com/john_caldwell/MRS/Rehearsals/Michael-Eve-JCC/Michael_Young_Rehearsal-20090203.zip
I was surprised to find this was still out on the net.
Unfortunately, it requires a download - it won't play live. I tried. And you might have to mess with the files to get them to play.
The folks I played with have a much higher level of musicianship than I'm used to, but I like to think I rock more - rAndomNoIsE-and-brEakdoWns, but this is way prettier than other things I've done. My favorite parts are where I was seriously lost.
People tell me my voice is unique. That's the nice thing they say.
@Marco82 - Damn. I used to hang with some of those bands, sometimes do a tune or too. I looked for soemthing I was on, but no - I couldn't even find any shows that I know I was at.
I never felt the vibe of Pittburgh bands back then transferred to recordings well. Tapes and records I had of bands I loved were only marginally listenable.
Is that your site Marco? Were you part of Repunk? (that folder is empty) I was the guy who rode to South Park with a Telecaster strapped to may back.
SPAM CONTENT: Anyone interested in a bike busker band please contact me. I'm going to do this.
If a single dude can be "Iron AND Wine," I can be the Bicycle Busker Band. Some event will happen. I'll invite you all.
Saw the OK Go concert at Mr. Smalls in November with two local bands, Meeting of Important People, and Donora. Had those bands' tunes in my head for weeks.
If you want something a little heavier, I saw Nightwish in Allentown (as in, the eastern part of the state).
I'll confess to not even having heard of 95% of the bands people mentioned above. I haven't bought a record since about 1985. I'm more rooted in pre-1935, like at the Internet radio station Radio Dismuke.
will oldham aka bonnie "prince" billy aka palace bros. aka palace music is pretty much the best new artist I have heard
also +1 on that pentagram record erok
I've been mostly out of touch with the local scene (young kids will do that to you, I suppose), save for what I've seen at MoGlo. Pairdown is good stuff!
beach house is playing at Diesel southside on june 16
@Mick it's Chris Koenigsberg's site. He was with Carsickness until their internal strife. I was underage and using my brothers ID to get into the clubs for a lot of this(back in the day drivers licenses didn't have pictures on them for you young'uns). As I remember it, there used to be a ton of free outdoor stuff happening back then too. Way more than there is today. It was awsome slam dance'n (think mosh-pit) to several bands on flagstaff hill before the movies on Sunday nights. Now all they do is show the movie. Too bad too, because it would give wanna-be's a place to try their stuff. I'm the type that would rather hear a reall bad live band vs listining to a DJ.
Best show in the day - the Clash in the CMU gym!
No way - Clash in the CMU gym? '82? I think I was there. Also saw King Crimson with Robert Fripp & Adrian Belew, same place, and Mission of Burma in Skibo Hall ballroom. Mission of Burma still kicking ass.
@Marko82. We've likely been at the same shows. Maybe slammed into each other on Flagstff or the Banana.
RANT:
It's a a damned shame that they don't use the natural amphitheater of Flagstaff for more music.
I know of no other place outdoors, anywhere - in the world - that is as good for having a band with an audience into the thousands.
It's way better than Star Lake. Station square is execreble.
Flagstaff is better than any of the bigger venues (Palumbo, Mellon Area, etc), and almost as good as a well-designed, well-built 3,000 seat auditorium like Heinz. (Nothing beats the Carnegie though. An OK band at the Carnegie Music Hall is as good as a great band anywhere else.)
The places the City and WYEP and others they use for outdoor concerts suck. Hard.
Muddy, bad-sounding, flatlands with echoey surfaces? Ugh.
Point Park takes pretty picture. I had a grilreind that was really pretty too, but like having concerts at Point Park, totally insane. WHY? Schenley Plaza? Gosh, maybe if we put up a few more large flat concrete surfaces a hundred yards from the stage we could make it worse! (But maybe not.)
With the exception of the north shore which seems OK and small, they are all bad. Not marginal or anything. Bad.
So we pay good tax money for excellent musicians and have truly mediocre shows - when we have the BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD languishing with 4 couples making out on blankets.
Mick
You can't have concerts in the parks anymore because there's nowhere to hang the corporate logos...
Any prog-heads here? I saw a mention of King Crimson a bit ago, but that's about it.
King Crimson. Album: depends on what you're looking for.
In The Court of the Crimson King - classic bebop-progrock-alongside-dramatic-mellotron-passages.
Red - Like above, but harder/heavier and less mellotron.
Starless and Bible Black - Schizophrenic mix of heavy prog and far-out, abstract softer tracks
USA - amazing live album (and I don't even like live albums) that samples a bit of all of the above
Yes - Close to the Edge
Soft Machine - "Second" if you want what the band's frontman would call 'pop' but is a far cry therefrom, "Third" if you want lengthy jazz odysseys
Can - Tago Mago
I could list prog bands all day, so I'll keep it short and to the better-known ones.
It just occurred to me while thinking about all this good music, that I hope no-one is listening to the music, with ear-buds, while riding. ?
lately I'm all about

- Klaatu (from whence came the tune "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft")
- Carpenters, "Passage" (containing their remake)
I somewhat pity the current generation. I don't know how you are going to preserve the bizarre, off-beat tunes that don't make it to the mainstream. Those iPods aren't going to last forever. Have you ever heard the John Biggs tune, "Send Me to Glory in a Glad Bag"? Or Frank Sinatra's self-parody of "High Hopes" for JFK's 1960 election campaign? I got 'em both on a 45.
Oh MAN! This is a great thread According to Last.fm, I've been listening to copious amounts of the following:
Wolf Parade
Broken Social Scene
Sam Cooke
The Clash
Unfortunately you can't scrobble vinyl (YET!), so those results are a bit skewed. I'm still proud as ever to admit to listening to Jesus Christ Superstar WAY TOO MUCH. If you're into racing bikes and rock operas, I hear it's excellent pre and post-race jams.
well looking at grooveshark I have been listening to
(in order of my last playlist)
The Nails
They Might Be giants
Dr Horrible sing along blog soundtrack
Barry Mcguire
Anne Lennox
Bob Marley
Lords of Acid
Lynrd Skynrd

Sleigh Bells kicked it at Brillo this past Saturday.
Also:
Anathallo
The Go! Team
Ratatat
The Notwist
Arcade Fire
Mute Math
June Carter Cash
Joni Mitchell
Sufjan
Nick Drake
Aretha Franklin
Sigur Ros
and of course, The Beatles... [for] All My Life...
dback: +1 Annie Lennox, lol. that was my first tape ever.

Given how electronic memory is progressing, I expect that the next generation of personal listening device will contain copies of every commercial recording that has ever been released. I imagine there isn't more than a billion of them, now. I expect no more than a few billion a decade from now.
@swellxelle Broken Social Scene
In running for best band evah!
AND!!!!
They are coming to Pittsburgh in a THEATER!
Sept 8 at the Byham.

also, the thing with digital music is that the data isn't stuck on one physical device. when your ipod/phone/computer/etc reaches the end of its life the data just moves somewhere else. i have probably been through at least 8 ipods/iphones over the last decade and easily 10 computers between desktops, laptops, home and work. i still have all the music that was on every single one of those devices, and it is still the exact same quality it was the day i bought it (yes i buy 95% of the music i own, the other 5% was given to me by friends to check out and has generally led to many more purchases)
I did mine according to last.fm as well. It's more or less what I said in my first post, but it goes back about 4 years.
I've been indulging in some guilty pleasures lately. So I'll split mine into embarrassing and not.
Embarrassing:
Luba, Lady GaGa, Adam Lambert [ And yes, I'm skiping the Mon Valley Century to see him in Eire], Men Without Hats
Not:
Electronic, Tom Paxton, The Decemberists, The Bolshoi, Matisyahu, K'naan, Greatful Dead, Joy Division, M.I.A., Nick Drake, She Wants Revenge, Switchblade Symphony, Small Halo, Tre Lux, The Waterboys, Bruce Springsteen, The Cure, David Bowie, The Flaming Lips, Kate Bush, Modest Mouse and New Order
oh god yes.

Here's one for Mick! Probably the best cover I've hard this year.
Took Aluminum Tunes off the platter and now spinning The Endless Summer Soundtrack.
@sloaps; have you seen Endless Summer II? What a hoot! Also, did you see the Arsenal Pool Party on Saturday has a surf theme? 6 until after dark, Leslie Park (empty) pool off Butler Street in Lawrenceville. Crap, now I have to click on your link and start dreaming.....
Wow, I just read a notice about the Leslie Park pool surf thing! It sounds fabulous. I have some Hawaiian shirts that I have not been wearing enough.
I just saw that the Iguanas are playing at the Blues Festival on Friday night at 7 p.m. I might have to skip the FOC ride to see them. I love the Iguana's old stuff. They are described as Jimmy Buffett-ish, but I don't see a lot of resemblence. A little more indie-ish than Buffett, and not so cheesy commercial. Admission to the Blues Festival is free on Friday with a donation of a bag of goods to the food pantry.
Moe!
Anyone going to the 3 day moe.down festival in Mohawk NY this year? They just announced the final line up:
moe.
The Black Keys
Nas & Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley
Mike Gordon
Lotus
Jakob Dylan
Punch Brothers
Built to Spill
Tortoise
Ryan Montbleau Band
The Macpodz
The Brew
Monkey Wrench
Orgone
Turbine
Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds
my favorite song changes almost daily. Today it's:

Awesome music.

I think my favorite vinyl that I own atm is....
One of my all-time favorite albums, It's really affected the way I think about the world and some of the things that are going on, and it's still relevant today.
but does it have THE poster?
sadly, no. It was the first thing I looked for when I opened it.
Dude, always wanted the penis landscape poster but I do have Celtic Frost's "To Megatherion" with the jesus slingshot cover.
Love "forever changes"
Big Boys "lullabyes make the brain grow"
Harder They Come Soundtrack
GBH "No need to panic"
Chron Gen "Chronic Generation"
Hawkwind "Quark Strangeness and Charm"
Rainbow "Long Live Rock n Roll"
Toxic Reasons "Bullets for You"
Citizens Arrest "Discography"
Cro Mags "Age of Quarrel"
Animals "Best Of"
Honey, we came to dance with the girls
With the stars in their eyes
Do the jump back jack
Stop and slide to the right
Never break their hearts,
Never make them cry, come on
Honey, strike up the band
Play a song that everybody knows
If I'm not your kind
Then don't tell a soul
I'm not the one who hates being alone, so come on
Brian Fallon is the most beautiful man I've ever seen in my life.
There's a lot of videos, but it was really tough to pick so few. Every song is just so amazing.
I'm not sure there's any two guys with more soul than the Black Keys.

Sam and Dave?
perhaps...but I still love the Black keys.
I wouldn't have guessed that
damn noah you bet me to it. i love me some stax!
Just had a band called emit send me a link to their music in music alley. its some really good stuff. (well at least I like it)
Soulwise, liking Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears these days.
cburch
I mean come on. Their biggest hit is called SOUL MAN.
I had all kinds of fun introducing Stef to Otis Redding's original versions of many of the songs others have covered last year. She had never heard anything of his other than (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay
otis redding is wonderful.
first of all, huge props to sirius xmu. i had never really listened to satellite radio and stumbled upon this while perusing, and it's been a great boon for the tiny part of me that still yearns for new music (it's actually getting bigger).
for the rest of me: i found out that HUM has played a few shows in the past year, and so i've been playing their stuff in my head like 24/7 lately. one of my favorites of all time. there was a point where i had traveled a few thousand miles to see their 3 "last show ever"s.
hum's spot in my head was taken over on saturday night by "home" by edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros. i've been away from pittsburgh for a month now, and i miss it, so it has that emotional component. and plus, that's a catchy tune. though i am *certain* that i've heard it in a commercial before. possibly on hulu?
and lastly: a few years ago, my friend found a cd in a bargain bin at a local music shop and bought it for no reason at all. the band is called acrobat down, and it's this awesome lo-fi indie rock. the cd got ruined, and i lost all the mp3s i'd made of it, and i hadn't heard it in years. but today i found the whole album online! yay internet! anyone ever hear of these guys?
some of my favorite bands are just random gems that i got lucky and happened to hear somewhere, but no one knows who they are or anything about them, and they've of course all stopped playing 10+ years ago. i go through life hoping i'll just randomly meet someone who also loves one or more of these bands.
Slint - Spiderland
Schleigho
Make Believe / Joan of Arc / Owls
Botch
Busdriver, Radioinactive, and Daedalus - The Weather
The Jesus Lizard
Fin Fang Foom
TRS-80
Hella
anything involving Vernon Reid
HUM? check out Glifted if it hasn't been mentioned in this thread already.
+1 Otis Redding
Otis wrote the song "Respect". Everyone's heard Aretha Franklin's version of it, but the song was written from a male perspective, and hearing Otis sing it, it comes across altogether differently.
To me, at least, you need more than the recording, whether electronic or not is irrelevant. To really appreciate the song, you need the story behind the song.
Here's another great singer-songwriter: John Hartford. Did anyone ever get to see him at a live concert?
Some songs I'm obsessed with lately:
Truth
I don't want solidarity if it means holding hands with you
Jacksonville
Get Out (mostly because I'm in love with Anthony Green, and I just saw Circa Survive live last week)
Sense and Sensibility
A nervous tic motion of the head to the left
My ipod broke two months after the warranty ran out
This thread remneinds me: Broken Social Scene at the Byham, Tomoorow! (September 8, 2010)
Anyone want to get tickets? Do a bike cruise?
Been listening to some real early Billy Joel, as in before "The Stranger". Songs like:
Angry Young Man and Root Beer Rag (incredible piano in each)
Captain Jack (boy, is this depressing)
Say Goodbye to Hollywood (really catchy tune)
I've Loved These Days (bittersweet reminiscence & transitions)
Seems these tunes mean something different to me now vs. when I was in college.
Mick - I'm definitely going to BSS, although I already have tickets. I might take the bus just because I'll be right by the busway station. So, um... I suck?
I'm hoping to get Broken Social Scene tickets during my lunch, assuming they aren't sold out. Anyone interested contact me.
Salty - it would be good to meet up, maybe after the show?
How I missed the Polvo subthread and subsequent Pittsburgh show I'll never know...
kid606 - Who Still Kill Sound
bust a move at 0'40 into the link'd video, awe yeah.
I love Andrew Bird today. Perfect homeworking music.
this song is making me want to cry, simply by the emotive qualities of his voice:

"How much money do you need, to give yourself a sense of security?"
My work network stopped sucking (as much), so I've gone back to Rhapsody, which is totally awesome.

My now a bit out-of-date Last.fm profile:
I just got back from a vacation which included the Matador @ 21 show. Wow, that was awesome, although I think I'm completely ruined now - how can any show top that? 26 great bands over 3 days, in a small (2100 seat) arena. I've never been to a show before where the last band started their set at 4:15am. After I watched some guy sing Dead Milkmen karaoke at 3:30am.
I almost didn't miss my bike - although considering I didn't go outside for 3 days it wouldn't have really helped me anyways. Plus LV does not appear to be a bike-friendly place.
- Ralph Stanley and The Clinch Mountain Boys (Bluegrass is the new punk er something ...)
- Los Crudos/Limp Wrist
- The Fitt - "When The Fitt Hit the Shan" (Best Pittsburgh band and record ... ever?)
(Bluegrass is the new punk er something ...)
On that note, I just discovered this guy...

If you like banjos, he's amazing.
I love the banjo, but I have little tolerance for the sound of steel fingerpicks.
I like old-time banjo.

If you want really old-time banjo, check out this 1902 recording of "The Stars And Stripes Forever", made when the song was only six years old. (direct link to recording requires RealPlayer or JetAudio)
Anyone interested in an extra ticket (free!) to the New Pornographers @ Diesel tonight? I'll be riding down from E. Lib around 6:30 and I guarantee the show will be awesome.
@Mick: Great pointers. Old-Time never gets old. (And the Horseflies have been touring again...)
NPs were fantastic (despite the venue sucking). wow, i really do love that band, and i fantasize every day about being the lead singer in a band with neko case and kathryn calder as my backup singers.
btw, mick took the ticket (and repaid me in beverages) - hopefully we didn't wake up the people on the corner of joncaire and boundary standing out there talking about music
Thanks, Salty. I wasn't familiar with the NP music, but DAMN they give a great show!
been listening to yo la tengo recently, especially the album i am not afraid of you and i will beat your ass. the song "i should have known better" had this gem:
i had a small run-in
with a driver and his wife
you might call it road rage
but we got out with our lives
conceding nothing
i held my ground
and now that it's over i'm saying that there must be a better way
made me think of this place and some of our various stories.
I like that. I'll have to look it up.
I've been listening to Ghost mice too much. Dude's voice takes a bit getting used to, but I've gone from a "What?" kind of feeling towards them, to warm fuzzy feeling.
and I can ride my bicycle
anywhere I wanna go
I can ride it to the health foods
store I can ride it to the show
and all I gotta deal with is
a stupid SUV filled with future
yuppies who try to run me
off the streets
I love these two songs:

The guy who used to run The Prism Coffeehouse in Charlottesville, VA, Fred Boyce, used to say that Bach only wrote for the cello because the banjo had not yet been invented. He played Bach on the banjo all the time and it was unbelievable.
I like both clawhammer and resonater.
@ Mick -- nice clips!
I like old-time banjo.
So Mick, when you gonna learn to play? (hint.)
So I got bored, and started making a compilation of songs that came out this year. It ended up being half songs released in 2010, and half songs by bands I just started listening to this year.
If anyone's interested:

Discovered this week and instantly loved it: Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling &
Dharohar Project - EP

I really like 8tracks.com
They have some decent playlists there.

I was so sad that I missed Freelance Whales while they were in town at the beginning of this month. ugh. Their stuff is "sonic happiness" to my ears.
I've also been listening to a lot of Black Keys and Avett Brothers lately. Aaaand Sufjan's epic Christmas album.
So much good music, so little time...
does anyone here happen to know where I might be able to get a new needle for my record player? (my records collect cat fur, which then gets stuck on the needle, which I periodically pull off. last time I tried to clean off the cat fur, the entire needle came with it!)
Anyway, I love this video. It's so borderline creepy/hilarious/strange.

From their album, Rubber Factory
(sorry if I've posted it already, I lose track. also, I'm stuck in my little bubble of 5 or 6 bands right now)
"Came off" as in broken? Or merely pulled off?
Use the telephone. Start with Jerry's Records in SqHill, or maybe Paul's CDs in Blmfld.
It would help to know what needle is/was on it most recently, i.e., is it what came with the machine or an exact equivalent, or alternatively, has the original been replaced with a different type of needle?
Assuming the former, they can fairly easily figure out what you need by your giving them make and model #. Assuming the latter, you may need to bring at least the needle to the shop.
Lacking Jerry's or something local, look online.
I'm looking forward to this new Wanda Jackson album produced by Jack White.
yeah, it broke. it looks like the needle is in a tiny red piece of plastic that connects to the rest of the arm, and the little red piece ripped off. I'll dive them a try though. If that doesn't work, goodwill sometimes has inexpensive turntables.
Gang of Four are playing at Club Cafe on Feb 10, for any old post punks out there. For you younger folks, think of them as the fathers who can still kick any of your friends asses.
Erica, don't pitch the machine, and similarly don't expect the Goodwill turntable to be in any better shape.
Call Jerry's & see if they still have the offer to evaluate a TT for free & tell you what work it needs, if anything. You'll have to bring it there & leave it a couple of days, but IMHO it's worth the trouble.
it would definitely be worth it, I'd just have to take a bus, because its a great big beast of a machine (tape deck and cd player on it too, but only the turntable works)
Thanks!
didn't think it was possible, but I'd forgotten how much I love Beck.

I love how none of his videos make any sense at all.
For some reason this song has been stuck in my head all night.
"He goes to work with only his one tool..."

Damn, completely spaced on this one and it's sold out... but apparently at least the first hour will be live on YEP
I'm pretty sure that this is the greatest thing ever.
Arcade Fire just kicked ass at the Grammys, bmx bikes all over the stage. And album of the year. Excellent.
My boys won best alternative album
Gwar tonight at smalls.
^ haha, too bad this doesn't coincide with the Viking-themed ride.

Portugal. The Man is playing at Mr. Smalls June 7th. $17, but I've heard that they put on an incredible show.
I'll be riding up there, some other people should join me for sure!

Washed Out - Feel it all around you
Zola Jesus - Seekir
