PARK(ing) Day is Friday! Changing public space for creative uses.

(PARK)ing Day is September 17 and there is a thread about it somewhere but I couldn't find it.

This is a day when people all over the world feed the meter for parking spaces and then use their time to transform the spot into a Park.

Right now there are at least 31 (!!!!) different organizations and companies planning to recreate a parking space. The CDCP asked us if Bike Pittsburgh would be interested in leading a bicycle tour of these spots. Bike Pittsburgh staff can't do it so I wanted to check with the active message board and see if anyone here really wants to do this.

Want to?

I'm off the 17th, barring some horrible work related nonsense. I'll play. Not lead, but I'll follow with gusto.

2010-09-01 13:44:34

I have work that day, but if it happened in the evening I'd attend/help/do something. I've been wanting to participate in park(ing) day for a few years now, but I've never had the day off to do so. :(

I'm not the person you want leading a ride, though. Still too prone to falling over and/or getting lost.

jeg
2010-09-01 14:52:50

I've never lead a ride, so I wouldn't want to all by myself...interested in co-leading ejwme?

tabby
2010-09-01 15:04:46

I think they are hoping it would happen around lunch-time because many of the spots won't stay up for very long.

hellololly
2010-09-01 15:12:21

Tabby, I think with your help, I think I could actually be of use (I agree with the "not all by myself!" semtiment!). I'd love to :D

Ok, now what do we do?

Two specific questions:

1) Is Bike Pgh having a spot?

2) Is this a ride trying to hit all the spaces? With 31 that could take a while, but would be AWESOME. That blog just listed the orgs, didn't list the locations - would we have to contact each individual org for their location?

ejwme
2010-09-01 15:17:06

Go team!

I think if we get a list of all the planned locations (do you have that Lolly?) we can start to figure out our route. I imagine some will be outliers that won't be a reasonable distance to include, but we should hit as many as we can. I guess several will be downtown?

Also, Lolly do you have contact info for each group? I think I would want to contact everyone and make sure they are still planning to do it and let them know about our ride and maybe estimate our arrival time.

tabby

I can help with any routing in advance. I am not

sure if I will be in town that afternoon.

steevo
2010-09-01 15:37:14

Bike Pittsburgh will have a spot and if anyone wants to help with that, let me know. I'll be working on this which is why I can't work on the ride but it does sound like it would be fantastic if you can do it!

I'm waiting to hear about a map with the locations from CDCP and I'll let you know.

hellololly
2010-09-01 16:32:45

Okay all of the spots will have to be turned in by next week and so we'll have a google map by next Thursday, September 9 to start planning the route. Does that work? This could be fantastic, thanks ejwme and Tabby, and steevo, and everyone else who might join in.

hellololly
2010-09-01 20:44:43

I could probably lead it if no one else wanted to.

2010-09-01 21:33:47

Great, three possible people to help with the ride!

If anyone wants to help create a parking space, that's still available and I believe OTB is working on one as well.

hellololly
2010-09-02 14:19:14

I'll join the ride for an hour or so around lunchtime. I'm sure others will as well if the route is posted ahead of time. Sounds like a lot of fun!

Maybe OTB can go ahead and bolt theirs to the road and just leave it there with some bike racks :)

Nick and Rob -- I'm planning our spot tomorrow if you'd like to stop by.

It looks like the Three Rivers Heritage Trail will be opening their North Shore trail section on the 17th at 11:am. If this Park(ing) Day tour pans out, be sure to add that celebration to the trip and make this brand new bike trail part of the route. That is, if the politicians get their act together and turn out for a ribbon cutting.

I'll be there, one way or the other.

kordite
2010-09-04 14:11:07

Wow! When I started this thread three days ago there were 31 organizations planning spots... and now there are 47! Holy motherfuck I can't believe this is so big! I never would have imagined this when I planned my first one three years ago!

hellololly
2010-09-04 18:11:09

I'm going to take the day off the 17th. Would be happy to help set up the parking spot and join in the ride.

I have Fridays off and would love to join the (park)ing space tour and could also help set up a (park)ing space if someone needs a hand. Does anyone need supplies for their space?--maybe there is something I could lend or donate?

skipdip
2010-09-07 21:43:38

Hey marsadrian and skipdip... I would love some help with the BikePGH space. Email me at lolly@bike-pgh.org if you want to coordinate supplies and day of events. It is going to be a really fun day!

hellololly
2010-09-08 20:15:38

do we have any info on the location of the spots yet so we can plan the ride? Lolly, are you doing any publicity for the ride? The start could be the BikePGH office since the route is TBD.

tabby
2010-09-13 12:02:03

I'll be back in Pittsburgh tomorrow and be in touch with everyone and work on publicity. I'm in Chattanooga with Erok and Scott at the Alliance for Walking and Biking Retreat now.

hellololly
2010-09-14 04:25:41

Okay there are 25 different spots that are being planned. I just got the locations and am mapping them on Google now for your enjoyment.

We're going to be interviewing people at our PARK(ing) spot about what you like about biking in Pittsburgh and what you'd like to see differently, so stop by... location and details to follow on the map.

If you'd like to help set up the swankiest spot in the city, email me: lolly@bike-pgh.org

I have the ride listed as starting in Oakland at Bike Pittsburgh's parking spot in front of Caliban's (410 S. Craig St.), for people to meet at 11:45, ride to start at noon and people to ride for as much of it as they'd like.

Here's the info I put about the ride in the blog post about PARK(ing) Day:

Will there be other PARK(ing) spots to see?

Yes! Pittsburgh is coming out in full force to celebrate this creative event for the third year in a row. Over 30 of your favorite Pittsburgh organizations and businesses are creating temporary parks and public spaces in every corner of the city.

But I just want to ride my bicycle, bicycle, bicycle…

You’re in luck! Industrious and illustrious Bike Pittsburgh volunteers are orchestrating a lunch-time bike tour of all (or most) of the 25+ temporary parks. Meet at the Bike Pittsburgh Lounge for the ride at 11:45 to leave at noon, and watch this site for details as they unfold. We’ll share the Google Map with you with all the sites once it is complete.

I tried to look, honest, is there a route laid out for this? I'm planning to go the riverfront trail thing at 11:00, length of stay will depend on the viability of the refreshments, but I would like to hook in on this ride somewhere.

or, on the thread, the day of, you could just put a time mark and the next stop, like a rolling tag-o-rama.

I'm trying to figure out my day Friday. Work is screwed.

Just noticed, is the starting point consistent between both posts?

edmonds59
2010-09-15 13:46:05

ejwme and I are getting together to plan the route and co-lead the ride...we have just been waiting to find out where all the spots are located so we can create a route. I thik we're hoping to have it by tomorrow morning.

i like how this ties nicely in with Car free Fridays in the southside. here's what's going on in front of OTB in the south side

September 17th, 2010 is South Side Car Free Friday & National Park(ing) Day

OTB Bicycle Café Takes Part in National Park(ing) Day

South Side, Pittsburgh, PA

On Friday, September 17th, Over The Bar (OTB) Bicycle Cafe will participate in National Park(ing) Day by transforming the ordinary parking spaces in front of their café at 2518 East Carson Street into a Reduced, Reused, and Recycled Bicycle Friendly Pedestrian Park. The park will be interactive and fun featuring creative installations such as bike racks made from recycled bike parts, interactive Bikerators (bicycle powered generators) from Kova Enterprises. The public is invited to stop by and enjoy this pedestrian haven on Pittsburgh’s South Side with OTB offering the Bike Pittsburgh burger, The Bicycle Advocate for $5 and East End Brewing’s Pedal Pale Ale for $3 from 5pm-12am. The park will be open from 11am to 12am.

Looks like Friday is going to consist of a ceremonial stop at work to check in, just so I can ethically refer to it as "bike commuting".

I'm mapping the locations now and I should have it ready by 11-1130.

I'm using "Map Builder" because Google Maps won't let you add information about the locations so on this map you can click on each spot to find out what's happening there.

I hereby declare this Friday, September 17th, 2010 as "Too Many Rides, Too Little Time" Day, the most Bicyclicious Day Ever. What a wonderful problem to have, I can think of absoultely no better connundrum to try and solve, a giant day of WIN.

I'm so excited I could just spit.

ejwme
2010-09-15 15:13:50

uhm, will you be spitting on me when we meet to plan the route tonight? if so, I may wish to reconsider the in-person planning session. :D

By a strange coincidence, I have the day off so I've been planning on making it a biking day. I'll ht the Market Square thing downtown, visit a few park(ing) space in the strip, cross the river to attend the Rt 28 trail segment opening, probably not be able to get to the BikePGH space in Oakland by noon so I'll probably ride up through the Strip towards East Liberty to visit all the park(ing) spaces there before rolling back through Oakland to the South Side Bike Tour at REI. I'll peal off of that and go to a skeptics meeting at the Double Wide rather than going to OTB.

That's going to be 12 hours of riding. Well, I'll probably break that up with sitting around in parks, socializing, resting, reading and such. Still. That's a lot of riding.

kordite
2010-09-15 18:49:49

That's similar to my plan for the day, though by 9:00 pm I may have to call for a helicopter evacuation to get home.

edmonds59
2010-09-15 18:56:59

That's my plan too - but I'm going to camp out at ARB/Washington starting as early as I can haul my lazy butt out of bed. I'm gonna count those Oakmont commuters - they can't hide from me!

I was going to try and work the new part of the Northside Trail into the ride, but there are so many cool spots to go see! Still, could be handy to get to the spots near the Aviary.

I have already planned my "Um, I'm sorry I rode too far, can you come get me?" speech to induce maximum pity and sympathy, but puppydog eyes are difficult to convey over a cellular phone. Though I think my husband's patience is good for another two or three "come get me" rides this year, at least. :D

ejwme
2010-09-15 19:10:41

All that stuff on Friday.

Woods flocking on Saturday.

Dubois rides on Sunday.

And with these damned 3-hour bus trips home each night and 2hrs in the morning, probably biking both ways (16mi one way) starting ASAP.

That's a lot of biking.

How soon do we start training rides for Dirty Dozen?

Thanks for finding that map!

Tomorrow looks awesome and I wish I could ride my new bicycle all around town too, but the Bike PGH parking spot is going to be SO O O O O OO OOOOO fun that I'll probably never want to leave.

Due to all of these events and half the staff being out of town at a conference, we're stretched really thin on Friday so if anyone would like to help Lou for Car Free Fridays on Friday at Market Square from 7am-8:30am.
