when i was at the heinz history museum, they had a bike that lance armstrong rode in some classic here in the 1990s… it was hung up behind a tv and hardly noticeable. that is the only bike thing i saw besides a big racing pennyfarthing

Thrift Drug Classic. Amazing races, the ones referenced in the above Bud Harris article. I went to 2 of the 3 races that Lance won, so awesome. I still use one of the keychains I picked up there, potentially my very first piece of bike swag.

I have very fond memories of the TDC races as a wide-eyed high school kid. For a few hours, it was like being transported to France–standing at the hairpin on Sycamore, with the road painted with names and encouragement, screaming at the riders each time they tackled the climb.

Good stuff.

After he retires, 6-peat dirty dozen champion and Internet sensation Stephen “Steevo” Cummings. (Pictured here, photographer’s right, on the cover of the Post-Gazette.)

If anyone is interested in a video of a Thrift Drug Classic, you can download a torrent here:

http://www.cyclingtorrents.nl/details.php?id=609

Check out the intro, which talks about, and shows East Sycamore. This video is for the year that Armstrong got the triple crown, by allegedly paying the Saturn team to let him win…so the rumor goes.

This is pretty cool :)

If I remember correctly, wasn’t there a member of this year’s olympic cycling team from Pittsburgh? I think I remember reading that somewhere……

Matt Eaton, though he technically was from the sticks. I’m pretty sure that’s his Milk Race jersey visible in the Matt Harris kit pic above.

Eaton’s teammates during the Milk Race reads like a who’s who of 1980s US cycling…
