‘Helmet Filled With Hamsters’ will be the name of my TMBG tribute band.

If I come across a horde of cheap stuffed hamsters for some reason, maybe I’ll fill my backback and put them in cyclists’ helmets.

As for my own helmet, sometimes I lock it by the strap and sometimes I just hang it off the handlebars. Does anyone really want a stolen used sweaty helmet anyway?

Googling things like “bike helmet peed” “bike helmet vandalized” and “bike helmet theft” return very little. Theft only looks to be common with motorcycle helmets and I found nothing in the way of testimony about someone getting their helmet whizzed in.

I think this is just urban legend, that’s why I lock my helmet to my bike now.

I’m loving the idea of my helmet getting hamstered though.

Easter grass and plastic eggs would be cool also.

Benzo wrote:Yes. Theoretically this could happen. So could someone peeing in it, or putting a bomb in it, or filling it with hamsters, or hitting it with a sledge hammer.

Have any of these happened to you, or anyone you know in pittsburgh?

I wouldn’t know, and I hope you or I never find out. That’s the point. Foam helmets can be damaged without any indication according to the manufacturer, and by far less force than a sledge hammer.

Anyway, I wrote to the Pirates organization and they fixed the rules on the website so they’re unambiguous — motorcycle helmets are not permitted, bicycle helmets are.

I think somebody kicked my helmet at the hardware store in Ambridge or maybe now that I’m thinking about it, hit it with a shopping cart or buggy as they’re called there

I think that was in ’07 and haven’t had any issues since. If I’m going in a store I just leave it on, but if I’m going to show or something, I stick it on the bike, sometimes through the lock, sometimes not

Another update after a bit more pestering of Pirates management:

“Colleen,

We will be ordering additional bike racks for General Robinson Street. We did add bike racks to both Mazeroski Way and Federal Street over the past couple of years.

Thank you again for your email.

Dennis”

I’m getting a framed picture of those things for my wall when they’re installed.

Meanwhile, in Chicago… it couldn’t be easier to see the Cubs play the Pirates. I just left my helmet with the complimentary bike valet outside the gate!

the only reason i take my helmet with me is the light i have mounted to it is worth more than the helmet and sometimes i still leave it un locked . Who would want a used helmet ?

So, do we put it in the big empty cul-de-sac at the bottom of Mazeroski Way, or in the middle of Federal, which is closed during games anyway…?

^there is a parking lot directly across the street. Take out 3 or four parking spots, charge $3 per bike & you could make money off it.

Capitalism! (wink)

@Colleen, YES!

Good job! thank you for your perseverance!

Do you have a name or an email of someone with the organization that we can send an email to to thank them?

Or should we just use the racks heavily, as our sign of thanks?

Benzo

They really could have put some corrals here instead of just single racks, But progress is progress. They still need many many more.

Whoever runs the kayak rental under the bridge should consider a bike valet service. They already have staff there, not so sure about space though. I think a lot of folks would pay $3-$5 to not have to worry about you bike.

Initially, I was corresponding with Frank Coonely, but he passed me along to Dennis DaPra, GM of the Park.
They don’t seem to publish direct emails, but there’s this contact form:
https://secure.mlb.com/help/email.jsp?c_id=pit&primarySubject=Other&secondarySubject=None&dest=talkback@pirates.com

Or tweeting to @pirates

I’m going to re-arrange my exit strategy from the Park after games just so I can use those racks!

I would totally pay cash if someone would store my bike, helmet, and messenger bag securely while I’m at PNC Park, Heinz field, at stage AE (which has a no bags, helmets, or damn near anything policy), etc.

@Marco – that’s Venture Outdoors that does Kayak Pittsburgh and the rentals under the bridge.

You have a good idea. I don’t know that they have the space or organization for it right now, but it sure could be a good deal for everyone if they could work something out. Money maker for VO and peace of mind for folks that want to cycle to PNC Park. You should contact them.

I have a friend who works at Kayak Pittsburgh, and passed along the suggestion.

Colleen,

You are welcome and as always thank you for your interest and support of the Pirates/PNC Park.

Go Bucs!

Best Regards,

Hello Mr DaPra,
I rode by the park last night and noticed the new racks! This was a delightful sight! Again, many thanks!

You may want the folks at PNC Park to give Boston a call next week to see how this worked out for them:

“Fenway Park Offering Free Bicycle Valet For Red Sox Games This Weekend” http://boston.cbslocal.com/2014/07/18/fenway-park-offering-free-bicycle-valet-for-red-sox-games-this-weekend/

@buffalo, good idea. Maybe I’ll tweet my photos from Bucs vs. Cubs day at Wrigley and tag @pirates there too.

never mind, just did it. :)

“Anyway, I wrote to the Pirates organization and they fixed the rules on the website so they’re unambiguous — motorcycle helmets are not permitted, bicycle helmets are.”

Given that the title of the thread is no longer (and never was) accurate, can one of the mods please change it? It seems to be bordering on libelous at this point, and given that most of what’s being posted ITT these days is positive towards PNC Park, the title sends a message that is incompatible with the content herein.

Maybe just remove the “UNSAFE” from the title?

I have to agree with JaySherman5000 on this one. PNC Park is and has been definitely stepping up.

I love the joint valet/storage idea for N Shore venues. I went to the Nickel Creek concert last night, and had a huge “wrangle” w security. They wouldn’t even let me bring in my bike light, and there was no way I was leaving a $200 light set out on the street “at my own risk.” Eventually ended up riding back downtown, parking bike at the office and walking back to Stage AE. Considering the insane traffic in the area it would be great if the other venues would start stepping up like PNC Park seems to be doing. Excuse my rant, but I’m still really annoyed with their security staff – esp since this was Nickel Creek – not Insane Clown Posse. LOL.

I didn’t realize Nickel Creek was touring… :(

Is that like Nickelback, with water features?

And yeah, someone change the title, this is what happens when you opt for sensationalism.

Drewbacca

god no… Nickel Creek actually has talent. Kind of a bluegrass-pop-crossover sort of thing. They’ve been playing together since they were kids in San Diego.

Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile And Stuart Duncan: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7EcT5YzKhQ

OK, done derailling the thread now.

Going to the big football match at the ketchup stadium on Sunday, will probably bike at least part of the way there. Yes, some decent parking facilities would be nice.

I agree, I keep forgetting who to pester to moderate forums stuff, help?

So, I discovered today that the Pirates installed EVEN MORE racks along Maz Way!

I believe Erok is the main moderator. Don’t know how closely he pays attention to individual threads, though, so it might be necessary to PM or email him directly.

Denver stadium is not only opening a valet, but you can use their bike share bikes too. http://denver.cbslocal.com/2014/09/15/broncos-b-cycle-introduce-bike-valet-system-at-home-games/

The article doesnt state it, but I guess the idea is that if you had to “dock” a B-bike at the stadium there would be no way of assuring that one would be available to ride after the game. It would suck if you pedaled there but then had to walk back because there were no B-bikes available- especially if its a few miles. This ties up the use of the B-bike for the length of the game, but it might tempt some to ride the B-bike that normally wouldnt.

Does anyone know if this situation has been discussed with respect to Pgh.s bike share system?

That’s cool – looks like they waive the extra usage charge for the duration of the game (most bike shares seem to have 1-2 hour time limits).

Just wanted to say I biked to Friday’s game at PNC Park (my first time riding to the game). It was a sellout and just about every bike rack was in use. It took a little effort to find one but, I did find one! Clearly biking to the game is a popular idea. They could benefit from having even more racks.

My wife and I were riding through the North Shore on our way to and from Lawrenceville’s PARKing Day mini golf Friday night. On our way up the new Penn Ave track, we passed a large group of young cyclists in full fan attire and toting a large Jolly Roger flag on their way to the game.

On our way back through later in the evening (around the 3rd inning), my wife observed how full all of the bike parking was as we came off of the Clemente Bridge. And it proved to be just as full as we circled around to the other side of the stadium. Truly an impressive sight, and one that made us proud to be on two wheels! How much longer until the Pirates take the next step and start hosting bike themed promotion nights?
