Something that should definitely not happen during bike fest

I had to pick this from Urban Velo, so thanks. Something like this should definitely not happen during Bike Fest in August. And it should definitely not happen on the North Shore and into the Allegheny. I hope no one gets any ideas, because if anything similar to this happened it would be shameful and appalling:

I would definitely not do this. It does not look fun at all.

That legitimately looks terrifying.

I did this off a ramp at the end of a pier into Cape May harbor back when I was a 14 yo BMXer… you definitely want to push the bike away from you once you’ve got air. Do not land with the bike.

The bikes totally had floaties.

Definitely don’t get any cheapo beater bikes to mitigate the risk of breaking one while jumping it into the river.

Once upon a time someone who isn’t me rode bikes off a roof into a swimming pool.

Protip: if you ride a bike into a body of water (and don’t ditch the bike like these guys did), let most of the air out of your tires first.

I believe the milk jug being towed on a strap at 0.24 is intended as a recovery device. Also several of the bikes are wearing life jackets (0.40). Safety first.

Ha ha. I knew I’ve seen that jump before.

Is this related to you asking me how deep the river is by PNC park @edmonds59????

I’m sure he was “just wondering.” Really. :)

I deny everything.

I wonder how long someone could do this in the river before it would get shut down.

@nick I think once. Especially if it is anywhere near the rescue station or whatever it is right outside PNC Park.

It would be awaful to imagine a man of my stature and dignity doing such a thing.

If this is happening, pleast tell me so I can avoid it. Be specific on details.

You shouldn’t ever put one of those old BSOs to use doing this sort of thing. Not that anyone has a couple of dusty BSOs lying around. Can’t have that.

I’m an old white guy, I’ll strap a box of tea to a bike and yell “Guverment can’t tell me not to ride a bike off a ramp into the river!!”. Cops’ll let it slide.

Couple of things:

1) swimming is perfectly legal in the rivers. Obvously, I would like to keep it that way.

2) if it has been raining within 24-48 hours just ride your bike into your toilet instead. That way it’s only your waste and not all of Millvale’s.

Not that anyone has confirmed or denied any such nonsense, of course.

@dmtroyer There is a small bikeshop in Coraopolis. Around 5-6 years ago I talked to the owner (I’ve bought my first used bike in US at this shop). He claimed that they do something like this every week and that is the reason he could disassemble, clean, clean, and assemble bottom brackets, derailleurs, wheel hubs, etc with closed eyes; he did it for a family bikes at least once a week. :) they jumped into the Ohio river all the time.

love those CSO flags they put up at the dock in Millvale…too bad when I first moved there I had NO IDEA what they meant so I let my lab swim in the Allegheny pretty much every day for months before I found out.

I knew a bunch of people in rural/central PA that used to do this into ponds all the time.

What !? Been done? When is that photo from?

That’s steep ramp, needs more distance, less height.

it’s definitely from the last few years, as you can see the upmc on the side of the steel tower. what it needs is a downhill approach, so that sufficient speed can be gathered.

I shot the image late last summer, not sure what month.

And, yeah, there is a little downhill approach in that area of the northshore – from the sidewalk above, through the grass and onto the pavement.

The painting of the bridge on the ramp cracks me up!

Stocking up on antibiotics now so that I can be river-proof in the event that this becomes a reality.

I would definitely not do this either. I’m definitely not attaching floaties to a bike in my basement. We should definitely not do this on the last day of BikeFest, Sunday, August 19th, as it would be way too much fun.

Put me down on the contact list so I know far enough in advance that I can make sure I dont happen to be down on the North Shore that day with a crummy old bike and a swim suit…

Perhaps it should not coincide with a costume-themed ride (Bridesmaids, or Superheroes, f’rinstance), as that would result in far too much frivolity and photogenic hijinks.

Reddan, you are absolutely right. Could you imagine if the pool ride or a random Life Jacket Ride found out about this not happening. It could result in all types of hilariousness that would be too much for the children. We must think of the children.

this is such a bad idea that i definitely will not be going to freeride to not purchase an old bmx beater to sacrifice in the big stinky for this event.

nope, not gonna’ do it.
