SouthSide trail Alcosan detour

I noticed a small paved loop was added to the SouthSide trail near12th street back in the fall. This struck me as rather odd, and I couldn’t figure out why they did it.

Today I rode through there for the first time since the winter and noticed that Alcosan has some heavy equipment there working on one of their lines in the middle of the trail. So that little paved loop was put in by Alcosan as a bypass to allow cyclists to detour around their construction. This is real progress people! I can’t imagine this happening 5 or 10 years ago. We are starting to get some respect. Baby steps, but appreciated.

So if you have the time, please send Alcosan a quick note of thanks, and let them know that we noticed & appreciate their efforts to keep the trail open. Who knows, with enough good karma, one day they might even let us ride down the Ohio past their treatment plant.

Thanks so much for the kudos!

We’re glad you like the change we made to make the SouthSide Trail better for cyclists.

Here at ALCOSAN, we are green by mission and green by choice. We use bikes ourselves to get around the plant whenever possible. And we are really proud that Bike Pittsburgh has designated us a Bike Friendly Workplace.

There are security issues that make extending the trail in front of our facility difficult, if not impossible. But to accommodate cyclists, we recently installed a bike service station just off the trail end. I hope you won’t need to use it, but we’re happy to provide it.

Thanks again!

Definitely appreciate the little reroutes on the southside trail. I used one a few days ago.

Also really appreciate the Fix it station at the end of the chateau trail.

+1 Thanks for not just closing the trail like some other places like the buncher company site in the strip.

I was talking to a fellow cyclist about this today and he wasn’t aware of the area, so I thought I’d post some pics here for those who don’t frequent this trail. And notice that the detour is paved, not just gravel.

I wonder if a similar construction project created that loop on the north shore trail. You know the one with the flat metal people?

Is it a new band “Flat Metal People”?
