the craigslist, taste-the-pain thread

Dear Pittsburgh Craigslist, I really do like you.

But why oh why does your 'bicycles' section always let me down? Or worse on occasion, profoundly disturb?

Let this thread feature some of the highlights, for posterity...

Do I get the dog and the fancy pink collar to take to the beach too?

Ha ha. Bikes don't appreciate in value.

The best part about this thread is reviving it after 3 years only to see the bazoongas post a few posts back.

Let's see, bike sells for $300 MSRP in 2007.

So, that gives the formula:

(Beach Cruiser x 5 years age / Dog with Pink Collar)^Craigslist = bike is worth ~twice the MSRP

Then, by simple extrapolation, I should be able to sell my 1975 Speedster for approximately the price of a new Enzo? Oh wait, I don't have a dog with a pink collar!

2012-05-11 17:26:43

at least the person finally sold the $10 used kids helmet they had been peddling for months. I would have put that on this thread.

The crazy level on CL has gotten too high to even bother remarking on. But the beach rider is a new spring tide in crazy.

Maybe a decent bike for $75, not $750.

But if it would get a suburbanite two miles out from the housing development tract home to the bus stop, not a bad bike. Thousand miles a year, crushing commonwealths, climbing DD hills, not so much.

We don't all need top-of-the-line $1,200 bikes to get our fat rumps out of the driver's seat. If it fits, works properly, and doesn't break down every 10 miles, fine!

Nice small front ring. Aforementioned fat suburbanite also means no pedaling strength, too.

@stu. You mean I have to give up my car for a bike AND ride the smelly bus?

@ JaySherman5000 (Beach Cruiser x 5 years age / Dog with Pink Collar)^Craigslist = bike is worth ~twice the MSRP

I think we all agree: That dog is a fine animal!

Is he trained to pull the bike like a husky dog?

My recent CL experience: Guy with $$$$ vintage electric guitar for sale, wants me to come out to the Butler turnpike exit and try the guitar out at a gas station there.

Right.

This one just makes me sad: Indiana, PA "Blue, 700cc road racing style bike. Very good condition. comes with pump and seat bag, stock pedals included. Getting ready to graduate, don't really need anymore."

What!?!

edmonds59
2012-05-13 13:13:25

"top of the line $1,200 bike" where can one find a deal like this?!

cburch
2012-05-13 19:11:08

I couldn't let this one go, straight from a schwinn ad:

"With alloy linear-pull brakes, it will prevent unintended accidents."

But not intended ones, know what I mean, Guido? (wink, wink).

okay so this is from ebay, not craigslist, but i HAD to share. shoppin around looking at handlebar bags, and found this description of a bag;

"offensive front waist pack,

medium-capacity design is suitable to go out shopping, or travel use the work; with multiple pocket design.

A strap attached so you can pay back the situation linked with hatchback or use, so that action added with more convenience.

Chartered as a handlebar before the package can be used to make your gift to facilitate cycling"

pay back the situation.

parvipica

I am tempted to do an experiment to see how that handles. Surprised how much clearance there still is with the downtube but the toe overlap... ugh.

Oops double post... but I wonder how stable that is regardless of the other issues.

parvi, I've wanted to payback the situation for some time, now I know how, thank you!

Is there really such a thing as an "in-offensive front waist pack"?

edmunds59 Is there really such a thing as an "in-offensive front waist pack"?

I saw a woman once that had a waist pack and didn't look awful.

No, really. It's hard to believe, I know, but I swear it's true.

mick
2012-06-13 20:07:37

Perhaps "offensive front waist pack" means "If your front waist is offensive, you can hide it behind this pack." (Big shirts work too.)

I think this may be the manufacturer. They make a variety of "Prodcuts of Bag".

steven

perhaps offensive instead of defensive?

I may be making assumptions here, but their English is still far better than any of our Mandarin. At least better than the average American's Mandarin. (I think technically the average person on this planet actually speaks Mandarin as a first language, so the specification is warranted?)

ejwme
2012-06-13 21:03:29

There are far more speakers of Mandarin than any other language, but the average person on Earth doesn't speak Mandarin.

Around a billion of Earth's 6.8 billion speak a form of Mandarin.

It's actually very stable, it greatly increases your mechanical trail by putting your contact patch wayyyy behind where your steer axis intersects the ground.

It was a pretty common sight when setting motorpacing records were popular.

<-- This linguist / language instructor says that's a machine translation. I know 'em when I see 'em (which suxxx for my students).

That said, their English is still better than my Mandarin.

2012-06-14 00:32:31

@rice rocket: that second pic really strikes a chord with the math nerd in me... its like a sierpinksi chainring!

melange396
2012-06-14 04:19:29

I thought to myself, "what is motorpacing?" and then I saw that last picture. I had no idea people did that. Those chainrings are ridiculous.

wow, i thought the first bike was a joke! that's so ridiculous. now i really want to try riding one.

parvipica
2012-06-15 13:06:38

It's kind of like tow-in surfing, you have to get pulled up to like 30 mph before you can even pedal the thing.

edmonds59
2012-06-15 13:37:13

They need to hang some really large truck nutz from the seat. Just sayin'.

mick

Truck nutz! Perfect!

atleastmykidsloveme
2012-06-15 20:44:10

one of my coworkers hung a pair of truck nutz on my kona ute. they thought id be upset and rip them off, but i thought it was pretty funny. i bought some copper colored model paint so i could make them match the frame, but i have yet to slather the paint on my nutz. :-p
