hell yes. good call.
There is no such thing as too much flocking
With the five Fridays this month, we are left with an odd flock-free Friday. We all know a week without flocking makes everyone antsy, so lets Flock to BBQ again!
Meet at Dippy for a short ride to Doublewide Grill on the Southside for from veg/vegan friendly BBQ.
What better that food, friends, and bikes? (Beer?... they have that.)
never been to doublewide. seems like the best time to go. i'm in.
I'm going to be forced to start a facebook page, aren't I?
Content of the Facebook event page for the neo luddites.

Description
With the five Fridays this month, we are left with an odd flock-free Friday. We all know a week without flocking makes everyone antsy, so lets Flock to BBQ again!
Meet at Dippy for a short ride to Doublewide Grill on the Southside for from veg/vegan friendly BBQ.
What better that food, friends, and bikes? (Beer?... they have that.)
Are we meeting at 530 or 6?
DoubleWide is prettyyyy good..I'll be riding from a block away, to Oakland, to ride back...Haha.What will the route be? I think we should ride into the city if that's a possibility? Well, at least a little bit longer ride than just heading over Birminham and done.
hoping i can get out of work by 5. sounds yummy
Cpollaack: Seconded. I'm down for a longer ride before or after.
Hopefully not after. Barf is not a good accent for my bike.
I vote before..haha.Maybe down to the Point? I plan on having a few beers and relaxing..always good after a fun ride.
a long ride before is great for working up a nice hungry. a long ride after is great for working up what you already ate. HORF!
aww i vote for after. work schedule definitely doesn't permit an earlier ride.
i may be strange, but i do better riding/exercising after i eat. even a big meal. i would be down for continuing a ride afterwards for anyone else who can't make it beforehand.
what if the ride were at 6 stef?
yeah. i thought that maybe people were gonna meet at 4 or 5 and then flock from oakland around 6.
nah it looks like you'll be good to go.. see ya then
the news is saying rain. hoping that it clears up just in time just like it did last week. it's been too rainy this year.
Stef, for what it's worth, I don't trust the accuracy of weather forecasts unless we're talking about a sub-24 hour time-frame. Too many times in the past I've expected X day to be a washout and is ended up being fine and vice versa.
^^THIS.
It's been especially inaccurate all week. Monday I bussed to work cause it forecast rain, which didn't happen. So yesterday I biked despite rain forecast all day.... nothing!
On the other hand... they called for rain last night, and it rained (did Team Decaf anyway - it's just water, right?)
i totally forgot that i will be at 7 springs getting the new brakes on my dh bike dialed in for racing saturday. probably wont make it back into town until 8:30-9. think you guys will still be riding then?
We will probably be noming then.
i might have to call stef and have her order me food and just meet you guys there then. if i park a couple blocks away and ride my v10 over it will be the equivalent of riding my road bike from dippy anyway.
Ha ha.
Ready for another Flock, the back of my modified Flock shirt, iron on letters by Honus Wagner sporting goods, Forbes ave. downtown, 50c/letter, $1/number.
now I have to make sure I don't make any enemies.
stef - you're not strange, I ride equally well on an empty or full stomach, its never made me ill.
I can cruise around on a full stomach no problem. If I try biking up mount washington after 5 pounds of ribs, you can bet there'll be 5 lbs of mess on the sidewalk about 1/3rd the way up.
Edmonds, that is the most awesome thing I've seen all day.
How much are Flock shirts anyway? Did I hear $20?
The one pictured there is a wicking fabric and was $20. Chances for one of those are long gone, but I just placed an order for more cotton ones (american apparel t-shirts) and those are $10 each. I'll have plenty of them next Friday.
I will probably try to buy one if i remember..And copy Edmonds to the fullest.Haha!
fyb?
Our reservations are for 8pm, so expect a short ride before eating. Please RSVP on the facebook event (if you can) so we have a better idea of how many are in the reservation.
Also, bring some cash (small bills) to pay for your meal so we don't have to split the check 15 ways.
Yes, i will probably get FYB on my FOC shirt..haha.
Says 30% chance of precipitation right now, looking good.
Are we rolling out at 6 or meeting at 6?
Regardless, I'll be there at 6. It takes me a little bit to get home from the Strip and get up to Dippy. So don't leave without me.
Says 40% during the ride but if it's anything like it's been all week, that will mean diddly-squat
...guess I was right. gone down to about 10% chance of precip tonight. enough to bust out the 'sunny' icon
I'll be there at 6 as well.
I may be there shortly after 6
great ride tonight, guys! i really had fun. I took a few photos, so here they are:

Man, I put way too much belief in the weather report yesterday and didn't ride, it was beautiful out. I had to content myself with a couple beers and watching some un-freaking-believable cloud formations, somebody got rained on.
when we were at the double wide, there were a lot of really nasty looking clouds south(?) of us with lots of lightening, but it never got it.
Yeah that storm head looked really nasty, with lightning in the sky and everything, but just rolled right past without making any noise.
Another great ride, bbq pulled seitan with a fried egg is the best thing ever.
Oh, and what was that thing that Nick said? Anyone? Beuller?
the only i thing i heard about was a ziplock bag
things were a lot quieter without nick's music rig though. we need to bring that back.
i think he only brings the music on the "party rides"
It's just a pain to ride with the extra weight. I have some things to sort out with the tall bike, but I'll bring music next time.
Let's not talk about what was and wasn't said last night.
Speaking of unicycles...
nick, do you really want someone else to bring an ipod? i can try to get together a playlist.. not sure if everyone would like it, but i would try to make it fun
Had alot of fun yesterday! Glad I run into you guys! Food was great! The ride was great! Company was great! Good, good, times.... except for the nasty margarita at Houghs..... Jose Cuervo tequila = death! I know I was in a bit of a funky-funny mood, but come on! It was Friday!
you remind me of my friend, heather. she is as tiny as you and as energetic as you and similar when you have a few drinks in you. well, except that she is known to bite people.
Hahaha, last night was awesome!!! I only really chat with Nick alot on the rides since i know him..But last night i talked to a lot of you at dinner and made some friends for sure! It was def. a great night!
bikeygirl, i'm sad we didn't get to be introduced since you came out of nowhere.
i just wish houghs had the tees in men's sizes
i bet you could fit into a youth large if they had that.. i know it is a bar, but they might sell youth sizes for ladies also. you're a skinny dude.. i could see you maybe wearing a youth size.
@Stef The shirts had those short girl sleeves--though I think Noah could definitely pull it off. You are more than welcome to bring music.
I've still got my 80s mix ipod from the first flock, too.
I have beef with the 80's.
you barely saw the 80's. the music is a lot better than the crap that is on the radio today. ok now i sound old.
I thought you liked beef.
Stef, you are old.
I love beef.
@Stef Haha! Your friend Heather sounds awesome I do not bite, but do like to throw punches sometimes, haha
@mssprout Haha! Probably for the best!
@Nick 80's music is alot of fun!
@bikeygirl: I am willing to bet that our decade difference in music has to do with our decade difference in age....
(Yea, I just called you old.)
Does this mean I can't listen to Vivaldi anymore?
(I'm sorry I missed the ride, but I was happily trying out bikes at a shop... hoping to catch the August one with a whole new perspective on riding)
@Nick... haha! True that - I agree! And go right ahead and call me old! I'm a puma, remember? Hahaha!!!!!
I actually fully-grew up with 90's music here in the States, while my 80's influence is really very international and actually 70's-80's and in-spanish (coming from Mexico, you know?) So, I don't think it really matters, to each its own
BTW..... I won't be coming this friday
Going on an office-field trip...
@ejwme: the Flock Party Ride is this week!
There isn't a Flock to BBQ schedules for August yet....
ah, but I will be on a plane, as my vacation to Not Here starts at 6AM Friday morning. I'm very excited to be Not Here for two weeks of doing Not This. Except I'll be missing out on Flocking
naah, it isn't the 80s so much as the mix. Leave off the decade and focus more on the genre. We could do beach tunes (circa '62-'69), bubblegum (late '60s), disco ('74-'81), doo-wop ('55-'63), British invasion ('63-'70 UK acts only), emerging punk ('78-'83), emerging rap ('80-'85) ... the possibilities are endless.
Well someone pick, bring music, or plan to listen to my not-so-eclectic mix of hip-hop/pop-punk/punk-ska/punk.
Stu will bring his records.
Speaking of which, I wonder if we could we rig a record player to spin proportional to the speed of the bike? That would be pretty wild. You'd sound like a superstar DJ just doing a track stand.
Dunno if I'll bring any records with me, but I can maybe rip some stuff to MP3 I'm sure you've never heard before. But being that we're riding through people's neighborhoods, that does limit it some. (Scratch "Music, Sex and Cookies" by George Uetz. Dang.)
Idea: "Louie Louie," on loop.
Problem solved.
punk was already over by 1978...
maybe we should have a "guest dj" for each ride - although i think if you want to dj you should have to haul the rig.
Black Flag, Bad Brains, and the Descendents disagree!
if you're using west coast bands to make your argument, you've already lost
well i will maintain that the only ramones i accept are the ramones with tommy.
Exactly! You just proved my point!
am i the only one who hates the music that came along with the british invasion?
british invasion '64 or '77?
i just think the beatles are ok.
I dunno man, the Dead Kennedys STARTED in 78, West coast, and they are more pure punk than say, the Sex Pistols, who were pretty much a vacuuous fabrication of Malcom Mclaren's. Just throwin' that out.
all the stuff you guys are citing as punk after 78 was early hardcore. not punk. punk was art geek music. talking heads was a punk band, 7 seconds was hardcore.
the pistols were a brilliant marketing scheme. a great band, not so much.
bah, everyone has their own ideas of what falls into which genre. some people call sonic youth punk. i prefer not to enter that debate.
@stefb i just think the beatles are ok.
The Beatles are teh most overrated band ever.
I love the Beatle and think they were great songwriters and a lovely band (if a bit weak in the drumming dept.)
On the otherhand, whenever the guitar geeks start talking about over-rated talent, I mention them. Usually to great chagrin and lot of nonsenical shouting about my lack of dscernment, etc.
They are my favorite band ever, but they were ridiculously extremely hyped. This is not to say they were not extremely talented and worked together with great synergy. They just weren't better than everyone else put together.
They are the band that made promoters and record sales-sleeze realize that the industry made much bigger profits selling 100 million records from one band, rather than 200 bands half-a-million records each. MUCH bigger profits.
Woodstock + marketing - love = First Niagra Pavilion. The Fab Four were at the start of this process.
i blame the mets for letting them play in shea
i dunno, i rather think the beatles deserved all the hype. i mean, not only did they push the limits of their genre in every direction and innovate as much as any band before or since, but they also made music that was enjoyable to listen to. that's pretty much exactly what i like in a band (though what i consider "enjoyable to listen to" often differs from those around me).
oh, and on the topic of enjoyable and innovative music, check out the tielman brothers, and keep in mind this was from 1960.
"Louie Louie."
On loop.
All night.
"Louie Louie" is cycling appropriate if and only if one is participating in a Toga Ride.
i DO have louie, louie. excellent song. i heard at one point it was banned some place for some reason?
people thought the lyrics offended our collective sensibilities. here's the straight dope
Straightdope is the best website EVER!
More importantly: is it friday yet?
Couple of pics I took from our excursion today. Rob had the big-boy camera, so there's that.

Great ride! One of these weeks we'll have to end at my house where there will be grilling (carnivore and vegan), bathrooms, and adult beverages (brominated soybean oil free).
sorry i missed it. i am really bummed about it. i wasn't feeling well and the heat was just gonna make me puke all over myself and someone else.
haha! i put a baby in you!
fyi: i was just tired and lazy and stayed home with stef.
dude, gross.
As usual, I wrote a blog entry about the July '10 ride. Since my daughter Amy joined us, it's geared a bit more to that than the group. Enjoy!
Stu, you have a very nice daughter, I'm glad she came along and we got to meet her. She seemed very happy on that "fancy" bike too... maybe Santa noticed.
Stu, very cool write-up, thanks. I'm sorry I missed the ride.
stu you should have arrived home one minute later. then the post would have been exactly 100% win.

Did anyone notice the picture of Ian flocking in the City Paper? They had a short blurb on bikefest, and they talked about the FOC rides and Nick as the founder.
Yep! I like how he said I was a Pitt grad, and not a Pitt drop-out.
FOC also was mentioned on the Post Gazette Online.
Yeah, my buddy Sean pointed the CP photo out to me. Thought it was a pic of Critical Mass, though. Heh.
That picture was taken by Robjdlc at the first FOC ride.
So Nick, what's your over/under on the number of people that will attend this week's flock all night?
I have no clue. I was astounded by the number at Midnight Mass--most of whom found out abotu the ride through the BikeFest calendar.
I would like to see over 50, all with lights, but who knows...
Anyone else see the article on the ghost bike re-lockup in the Pitt paper? http://pittnews.com/newsstory/memorial-service-held-for-man-killed-in-oakland/
Sometimes I really hate having a last name that is impossible not to mis-spell to pretty much everyone.
I'm surprised people can spell my name.
Dick Nrombosky.
If I was able to make the relockup, I probably would have given my name as Mitch Cocklord.
They did better than THE FEED by failing to mention anything about sparkles.
