I think quality square taper is going to go away, or at least become boutique. The main thing driving a lot of “innovation” in the cycling industry is “how easy can we make this to assemble?”. The outboard design is a real breeze to build, which I like.
They’re not better an any practical way. “Stiffer”, but whatever. Bearing life is at best no better. The move to ceramics is a) to get us back to the bearing resistance we had with square taper b) prolong the life of bearings.
I have no idea what to recommend for a touring triple besides a compact crank
