The whole outboard bearing system strikes me as a solution in search of a problem; it seems like a good system, but it’s never been clear what was wrong with the old one. Outboard bearing BBs use larger bearings, which, in theory, should wear more slowly. That said, I used a Shimano 105 Octalink BB for something like 2 1/2 years with no problems whatsoever. When I finally removed it from the bike, having bought a new crank that took a square taper, it was as smooth as the day I bought it. It seems a shame to arbitrarily scrap a design like that.
Good quality square taper BB’s are getting harder to find — I think Shimano presently offers just one sort of shoddy model — but they are out there. Tange makes good BB’s and they can be had for cheap if you hunt around. I think the IRD pictured above may be a relabeled Tange. As far as i can tell, everything Tange makes is of good quality and reasonably priced — I’m a fan.
