Walk or Bus (or Bike!)?

Check out Walk or Bus? It shows a chart that shows whether it is faster to walk or ride the bus based on distance. I think they should throw in an "or bike" category in there.

I think they'd need to adjust this chart for the Port Authority. :)

This would be a cool tool, but as greenbike points out, isn't real useful unless connected to a transit database. Even then, while bikes play no part in it, they very well could. Even then*2, somehow this info would need to be in hand at the point it is needed -- possibly the most difficult part of the process.

I think "bike" isn't on the chart because it would always win. Ok, maybe on the busway the bus could prevail.

As for walk vs. bike.

I usually like to walk if a trip is under 1 mile round trip. Generally I will bike on trips longer then that because it is easier and faster tho.

Not real.

My experience is that if the bus is due within a minute, you are likely able to walk 5 blocks before the bus catches up to you. Sometimes you can walk 2 miles.

My general rule of thumb for the east end:

walk-4 mph

Bus -6 mph

Bike - 8 mph

That is easy biking and fast walking.

If you are going a distance and both the start and end are on the same reliable bus route, then sure, the buses can be a lot faster than 6 mph. But they rarely are.

The buses are more like 10 minutes + 5 minutes per mile, I guess. For most trips, that is a lot like 6 mph.

I would say my average bus wait is higher than 10min b/c the 500 is not reliable, plus it's 20 min in between buses (at least). Like today, I got stuck in Oakland way longer than I had wanted b/c I just missed the 500.

I once sat at SFO waiting for my connecting flight to Sacramento. There was some kind of horrible delay where they perpetually bumped the "departing time" to an hour from the current time, over an over. If, instead of a suitcase, I had packed a bicycle, I could have rode home faster.

rsprake, São Paulo is the kidnapping capital of Brazil, which is why all the rich folks ride around in helicopters. I bet it sucks trying to park when there is only one parking spot (helipad).
