What to do when you're in an accident.

Hi, I'm Lolly, I just moved here a couple of months ago now from DC. Our excellent bike organization (WABA) developed, printed, laminated, and widely distributed spoke cards with the steps to take if you are in a bike accident.

I would like to work on getting some produced for riders in Pittsburgh, if there is nothing like that yet. It's been helpful to a lot of people. It would have been lovely information to have when I was hit by a car last year, but the spoke card was on my other bike which had just been stolen...

These steps are a bit different than your resources and deal mostly with being at the scene:

"If you're hurt in a traffic crash, don't ride away or shake off what seems like a minor injury-you might find later that it's worse than you thought. Instead:

*Call the police (911 or 311 or #77). If needed, get medical help immediately.

*Get the following information from every vehicle: driver name, address, phone number, driver's license number, license plate number, make of car, insurance company, name and policy number.

*Get the names and phone numbers of witnesses.

*Get the police report number from the police on the scene.

*Write down how the rash happened while it's fresh in your memory.

*Keep (or photograph) any damaged clothes or equipment.

**Also, if you're a victim:

*Don't get made at the scene. Keep a level head so you can ask questions and take notes.

*If injured, don't move unless you're sure you won't hurt yourself more.

There's a version of this printed on your Bike-PGH membership card. And welcome to Pittsburgh!

Lolly raises a good point though. What to do in a crash ought to be some priority info for outreachy stuff, not just for members. Is it printed on the map or the commuter guide? I don't have mine handy.

If not, maybe a card should be included with later editions of those things.

Hi Lolly, I know the folks at WABA well. In fact I sit on the board of the Alliance for Biking & Walking with Eric Gilliland. Great organization, great guy.

In addition to the membership card (I hope you'll become a member if you haven't done so already). check out the resources section. It's also in the online and print version of the 101 guide http://bike-pgh.org/101

I did just become a member, but I moved here jobless and so wasn't able to right away.

I may not always have my membership or wallet on me but I can always keep a quick reference on my bicycle. I'd be willing to look for sponsors / funds to pay for the production of something of this sort.
