You know the OTHER GUY is a cyclist when.....

I was inspired to create this topic by a guy I saw while riding in today. At the corner of Seventh and Liberty, he got pinched about three cars back from the intersection when the light turned red. Seemingly without missing a beat he lifted his front wheel, turned into the EQT plaza via a side entrance, and made the turn onto Liberty from the front entrance to that plaza.

I knew he was an experienced cyclist by his seemingly illogical route choice, which upon further consideration I now regard as logical and innovative.

Not the only time I have been struck by this observation, btw.

When I was in Wales, they would periodically place various gates on the bike route. (Usually at the border of people's property or at the edge of a sheep pasture.) These would require you to get of your bike, walk a little twisty corridor, open a gate and get back on.

One variation on that we saw (on in Cardiff itself) also had a very narrow section that with two grooves in it. This required that you not only get off your bike and that you hold it at about a 45 degree angle. The grooves would provide a place for your pedals and handle bars to pass through. Next to this narrow spot was a wider spot with a 2 foot step for your body to go through. (I don't know that I'm painting a good picture of this.)

As we were trying to figure them out, this young guy comes whizzing through, and slings himself off the bike and then running along side it, pushes it through the narrow section and then gets back on his bike. All without missing a beat and in about three walking steps.

It was like watching a trick horse-rider on crack. My sister and I stood there with our mouths agape for a few minutes and then headed on or way.

That was the first (of many times) that I realized that there are people out there whose skill as a cyclist is just awe-inspiring.

The great calves are half the fun of people watching at bike-centric events/locations. And, the other half of the fun is the actual event location.... in case you were wondering.

Personally I find that a well developed vastus medialus is pretty much a sure-fire indicator.

I was in Giant Iggle the other day having a smoothie and there was a young dad calmly following a lively 2 year old around the store, then I saw - bam - chainring stamp on the calf. I thought, Good man.

was it about 8:20 this morning... all black fixed gear with fenders?

@Stu, similar to the first one but the bike section had bars on either side that bent inwards with the 2 sets of grooves I mentioned. The groove for the handle bars would be about 6 inches above the highest point on that one and the pedal groove would be low enough that the bike could pass through at (roughly) a 45 degree angle.

Lon Las Cymru is the trail I did, btw... but I did it the other way (Holyhead to Cardiff) in 8 days. Coming from the Cardiff side would be pretty rough. The first 60 miles (from Cardiff to Brecon) would be a steady and pretty steep climb.
