advice to bike from Carnegie to Paddle at the Point

I plan to bike from Carnegie area to Paddle at the Point this Saturday. The bike map is great but it looks like the only way to cross the Monongahela is the Hot Metal Bridge. Is this the recommended route?

No need to go that far out of your way. West End bridge and Smithfield are both viable option as well.

Smithfield is just a fine bridge, shared sidewalk..which i enjoy since cars haul asssss on this bridge and the shoulder is quite narrow.

Since you'll probably be coming through the West End Circle (will it get a new name since they're reconfiguring it? West End Vortex?), go east on Carson, at the incline, hop across to the sidewalk and ride the sidewalk of the Fort Duquesne bridge, and it will drop you right into Point State Park.

I assume you are renting a kayak? If so, the launch site is at Heinz Field (area). You can cross the McKees Rocks and come down California to Brighton or California or Benton to McClure to Trail, or the West End Bridges, and then come down the stairs to the trail/stadium area. The Fort Pitt Bridge (sidewalk) to Point State Park to the pedestrian bridge to the North Side is probably the best option.

Oh yeah, Pitt.

pjendry, what's your chosen route from Carnegie to Carson St. ? there are a couple options, just curious which you've scoped out and/or ridden.

once you're over Greentree hill and "in the city" edmonds' suggested path is my preferred way, though Carson Eastbound can get sketchy depending on your confidence level, which lends merit to Swalfoort's North Side suggestion, but i wouldn't think you'd want to head any further West than the West End Bridge.

ain't no avoiding the West End Circle sometimes. incidentally, construction there does appear to be complete.

I like Noblestown Rd from Carnegie to the West End.

Thanks for the tips. They are very helpful for an out-of-towner. I will be meeting a new friend to use his kayak. Should I be concerned about the safety of my bike when I lock it up?

^Noblestown->^Mansfield->bombing down Greentree towards the West End is a BLAST, fyi.

lock up well to something sturdy, what else can be said?

Remove any easily removable accessories, lock it securely, and you'll be fine. Lots of people at the event, and at the Arts Festival nearby will keep the area well populated. That, in turn, should keep your bike safe, assuming it's locked securely.

Wasn't somebody working on some "lock it up right" cards? Use a good u lock right & should be no problem.

leave a turkey sammich on lightly toasted wheat with a thin spread of mayo in your left rear pannier

lettuce and onions would be cool too
